Susan Root Obituary

ROOT, SUSAN PHILLIPS

SUSAN PHILLIPS ROOT, born Susan Joy Phillips, daughter of Juliet Joy Phillips and Fredrick J. Phillips, passed away at her home on August 2, 2005, surrounded by her family, ending her 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Richard B. Root, her daughters Katherine and Elizabeth, her grandchildren Joshua and Kaya, and her brother Fredrick Phillips.

Susan was born on May 6, 1943 in Akron, OH. She graduated from Kent State High School in 1961, received her B.A. of Psychology from the University of Akron, and earned her M.A.L.S. from the University of Michigan. Her career as a librarian spanned over 40 years. She spent many years as a children's librarian and went on to be an accomplished Collection Development Specialist. She shared her love of reading and books with hundreds of people, and had a talent for matching readers with books that would become their treasured favorites.

Susan was a passionate and accomplished cook, gardener, seamstress, and knitter. Her green thumb coaxed every form of plant life, including her sprawling vegetable and flower gardens and exotic houseplants. Her inexhaustible nurturing extended to animals as well, many of them former strays and displaced animals.

Susan will always be loved and is dearly missed.

Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that any memorial contributions be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

I grew to love Susan when I sat in an adjacent "cube" in Collection Development. She was my mentor and friend in library-related issues AND parenting. She knew my girls loved animals ALMOST as much as she did, and was always sending them something, be it an ASPCA calendar or an interesting article on some kind of creature. I shall miss her kindness and advice greatly.
