Remembering my cousin Ted Thomas
Tom Wyche
June 7, 2019
My cousin Ted was a good individual and very accomplished in many facets of life. I am honored to have had him a part of my family and saddened at his passing. However, joyed that he has transitioned to oneness with the Lord. Bittersweet the joy of the passing of one of God's children.

I remember Mr. Theodore R. Thomas, Sr., as one of the few black motorcycle officers with the Metropolitan Police Department during my childhood. Occasionally seeing Officer Thomas ride his police motorcycle up Georgia Avenue, NW, in the nation's capital was a source of great pride for my brother and myself. Seeing men like Officer Thomas proudly serving as police officers encouraged my brother Donald Edwards and I to subsequently seek careers in public safety. Donald served 31 years with the DC Fire and Emergency Service's Department retiring as that department's chief. I served 21 years with the U.S. Park Police retiring as a major; 7 years with the Maryland National Capital Park Police retiring as a lieutenant colonel; 3 years as chief of the Montgomery County Department of Police and 7 years as assistant commissioner in charge of the Federal Protective Service. It was black men like Officer Thomas and his friend Metropolitan Police Department Chief Burtell M. Jefferson whose courage and perseverance provided the encouragement needed by many of the black men and women who followed them in public safety careers. I pray that God will provide Officer Thomas's family solace.
