I became friends our freshman year at UVM. I shared a room with Bayard that year, and Tim spent a lot of time on our couch. It was a great time, and I was lucky to be a part of the entertaining banter. Tim was so good-natured, you couldn't look at him and not feel happier. Perhaps his most endearing quality for me was his disarming, self-deprecating humor. You made the world a brighter place, Tim. We'll miss you.

Dearest Hillary, Lily Grace and Rosemary and the Sloate family:
Tim Sloate was truly in a class by himself. I know that I speak for the entire Chisholm clan when I say that we were all so truly blessed to have Tim walking in our midst these past sixteen years. He swept our little sister off her feet in San Francisco and we were all eager to meet the sky-diving boyfriend who we watched grow from an eager young man into a loyal husband and amazing father to his girls.
We could always count on Tim and I can hear my father's voice saying, "My man Tim will get the job done." Tim swept away our little sister, showering her with a love that many only hope to experience in a lifetime. He eagerly became a father, doting on my beautiful nieces, creating endless memories of summers at Laurel beach, Thanksgiving feasts with Tim and Jesse cooking up the stuffing, playing cards and Scrabble around the table, skiing at Jimminy, the girl's birthday parties in Worcester... the memories will live forever.
Never to grow old, Tim's ever-present smile and carefree ways will live in my heart as an example of how to walk through life respecting others, making peace and leading the way.
Tim... My brother, I will await the day we shall meet again, in His Kingdom. I know that you are by His side now, and for all eternity. Love, Steph and Co.

Dearest Hillary, Lily Grace and Rosemary and the Sloate family:
To me, Tim will forever live on as a legend in his time, he truly was in a class by himself. I know I speak for the whole of the Chisholm clan when I saw that we are so proud to have had Tim Sloate walking in our midst over these past sixteen years. The finest brother-in-law we could have ever dreamed about swept our little sister away to a life of happiness many can only imagine. The joy we felt seeing Tim and Hillary marry, bring my wonderful two nieces into the world, their birthday parties, ski trips to Jimminy Peak, Thanksgiving Day feasts, endless summer vacations spent splashing in the Great Peconic Bay. Tim always held up the rear, making sure the car was packed, his girls were ready to go and quietly providing his family with stability, his keen sense of humor and unconditional love. "I'll just ask my man Tim," my father said when he needed something done around the house, we could always count on Tim.
Never to grow old, Tim will live in my memory as always walking on the bright side of life, enjoying the simple pleasures and serving as an example to our family as one who was always ready to pitch in, lend an ear or lighten up the moment with his infectious smile. My brother forever, I will miss you keenly at our family gatherings and await the day when we shall meet again in His Kingdom. Love, Stephanie

Hillary, Lily and Rosemary...in your grief for this senseless loss of a man so great, I pray that you can find your cure and succor knowing how Tim sparkled with love and devotion for the three of you. From the moment you introduced him to us, Hillary, as your man, over 15 years ago, we knew you had a remarkable, special guy. He will be deeply missed, but we will cherish his memory and go forth knowing that the world was a better place for his friendship. May the Lord keep him and bless him eternally. Love, Andrea

Tim has left the greatest legacy a man can leave, a legacy of love. Hillary, Lil and Ro-Ro your family has always been an example to all of us. You have shown us all how to truly love, respect and honor the people who matter most in our lives, our families and friends. Tim will live on in our memories and in the stories we tell about him and in the way we conduct ourselves based on his impeccable example. We are blessed to have counted Tim Sloate a friend for so many years, he is forever in our hearts. " Goodnight sweet prince, And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

I will miss Tim's ridiculously corny jokes, sarcastic humor, wry smile, and infectious laugh. Our family won't be the same without Tim but he will always be in our hearts. Tim was really a great person and even better brother. He was always there for me - the last time I spoke with him he called Eva to see how her first day at her new school went - he always remembered the little things and that's what made him special. He was also there for me emotionally and physically at the airport when I came back from Costa Rica with Eva during a very difficult time in my life. I love you Tim and I am so glad you were my brother, even though I was a bratty older sister. I know you are in a good place now and you are sorely missed.

Tim was a kind and caring man, always looking out for others. When we arrived in a country unknown to us, he and his family were the first to greet us with a warm welcoming smile. Always friendly and always ready to offer a helping hand, he was the best neighbor we could ever hope for. He has given us nothing but fun and cheerful memories. Who can forget the haloween nights we spend together, as well as the easter egg hunt and the times at the pool. His memory will always be cherished by us. Hillary, Lily and Rosemary, even though we are miles away, know that we will always be there for you in heart and spirit.

Nick, Jack, Finn and I are so thankful to have spent such a wonderful day, with your dad, only a few short weeks before he died. I will miss his jokes, intelligent conversation, cute-crooked smile, teddy bear hug and love of life. He was so proud of the 3 women in his life. Some day (not too soon) I will tell you about our funny college days together! He will be kept alive forever in our wonderful memories. I feel so fortunate that he was my friend, my best friend's husband and your dad. All our love, Nick, Nicole, Jack & Finn

Words cannot even begin to say how sorry I am to hear about Tim passing away so suddenly. I cannot even imagine what you are going through but if I can do something for you and your girls I will be happy to. You have been and will continue to be in my prayers now and for a long time to come. I too know what it is like to be a single mom of two girls in different circumstances but if you ever feel the need to talk, I will be happy to listen and to be there for you.

I am shocked and deeply saddened. I had occasion to cross paths with Tim professionally on several occasions with different associations in DC. I grew to be very pleased whenever someone in my organization periodically -- and inevitably -- said: "Go ask Tim at UPCEA about it, he'll know all about how that's playing out in continuing ed". I came to value him as a knowledgeable expert peer. He was indeed a positive-thinking professional who always spoke highly of the field he supported. He had a very good sense of humor, and was always willing to share his expertise and insight with newbies. The educational research community has indeed lost a good member and friend. My condolences to his family and all at One Dupont Circle.

He was always very helpful if I asked him to email some information even though we did not know each other very well. My sympathies also to everybody in UPCEA.

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Sloate family. His sudden passing came as a complete shock to all who ever had the honor of knowing him. I moved to Massachusetts in the 4th grade from Tennessee. Scared, lonely and shy, Tim quickly made me laugh, feel comfortable and learn how to fit in with my new classmates. Even at 10 years old, Tim showed the unique qualities (sense of humor, generosity, leadership. apathy) that would make him the wonderful man he grew up to be. Thank you for sharing him. The world is a better place because of Tim. May you find some peace in knowing that in such a brief time, Tim lived life to the fullest and touched so many people.

Hillary – I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Tim’s passing. I instantly thought about Tim being literally the first person I met when I moved to San Francisco. After our initial lunch, I saw all the amazing things everyone else saw in him – big heart – big smile, to name a few. I also have a great memory of camping in the Sierra’s with the two of you. I will hold on to that memory stronger than ever. May you find peace and know that he will be watching over you and your girls.

To Tim's family,
You knew Tim as a husband, and a father, and a son, and a brother, and I feel confident that he was wonderful in those roles because he so often talked about you and the importance of family. I distinctly remember the January meeting in Arizona when he excused himself from a reception so he could go Skype his girls and "look like a cool dad."
My colleagues and I at UPCEA knew Tim in a different role; he was a professional, an expert, and an academic. He was personable, reliable, and thoughtful. He made an impact on countless university programs and continuing education professionals around the world. He was smart and helpful, and witty, and we knew he was cool.
Tim was part of our professional family, and we mourn the loss of our friend and colleague. We extend to you our deepest sympathy.

Please accept my prayers and heart felt sympathy for your loss. I knew Tim as a colleague and friend and cannot believe that just four months ago we were together in San Francisco and now he is gone forever. He will be missed by everyone in the Association. Hillary, Lily, and Rosemary,
I have had the opportunity to work closely with your husband and father over the past five years at UPCEA. I am filled with grief with this sudden loss and my heart goes out to each of you. You should know that he spoke always of his love for you. We also talked often about his spirit of inclusiveness for difference among people. I had so much respect for him. What a wonderful, wonderful person. We are missing him dearly and will always remember him. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Sloate Family -
Tim's passing is a huge loss to his 'whole' family ... including those of us who have known him for many years through UPCEA. I will long remember Tim -- his knowledge, helpfulness, positive attitude and demeanor, and great personality.

To the family of Timothy Sloate:
Although I have not had the chance to know Timothy as much as many of his other friends and colleagues, he and I worked on projects together. I have met him on a few occasions during UPCEA conferences and meetings, and we have spoken on the phone several times.
News of his sudden death saddened me profoundly and my heart goes out to all of you. He will be remembered in my daily prayers. My deepest sympathies to everyone in his family and may God bless you all.

Tim and I played hockey together years ago on a Mites traveling team. He was a great center but an even greater team leader.

(and extended Sloate Family – Mr. and Mrs. Sloate, Harry, Lisa, Lori, and Kevin)
Please accept our deepest sympathies and most heartfelt condolences. Tim was an absolutely magnificent person. Growing up together, playing hockey together, and going to school together I can’t say as I have ever met someone with such a terrific perspective on life. In friendship, he was always someone who could naturally lift your own outlook. His caring, his sense of humor, and his easygoing spirit will be sorely missed. Please know that many share your grief in Tim’s passing, and many are confident that he is at peace and home with the Lord.
With sadness Jack, Sharon, Katherine, and Caroline Bortz
