Wayne,
You live on in the memory of your friends. I will not forget the day my sister reported a new boy at Garfield Elementary, with a dazzling personality. All her girlfriends talked about him for weeks. When I finally met you, I began to understand the hubbub; you were the most outgoing and congenial kid I had ever met, and a 'smart mouth' to boot; everyone who met you liked you immediately, including my parents, and especially my Father. You made cracks to him, and about him, that I never had the nerve to even think of, and he loved it. Beneath the wisecracks, you were kind and considerate, a great reflection of 'Elaine', even though she didn't always think so. I never met anyone who got grounded as much, and for as long, as you did. Still, it resulted in the excellent young man you became, so I guess it worked. Just know you are never long from my thoughts; like everyone that knew you, I miss you.

MaryBeth, Christopher and family. I absolutely adored Wayne. He was a shining star in MCPS and in the world. His loss is still unbelievable. Wayne was a great administrator who hired me to come to MLK. He became a good friend to me and my daughter Michelle. He was her principal at both middle and high school. He also helped her get a four year scholarship to college by staying on her to get her applications and writings done. Of course his humor saved both myself and daughter many times. Rest eternally in peace.

just now read about his death in my retirement newsletter. He and I worked together at Magruder High School and I had the utmost respect for him as an administrator and as a person. He cared about kids so much and had the best sense of humor. I am just so sad for his family. He talked about his wife and his son with such pride.

Dear Mary Beth and Christopher,
My love and deepest sympathy to you at this time. To remember Wayne is to smile and think of all the antics we got into as administrators in MCPS. Mary Beth and Chris, as you know Wayne meant a lot to many people and I was one of them. As much as he didn't like to hear me say it, if it weren't for him I wouldn't be an Assistant Principal right now. I am open to sharing that because he made it very clear from the beginning that I had to have the necessary credentials to do so. He said that he only "pushed for people who were qualified". I respected and still respect that about him - he was fair and saw the good in everyone. Since his passing, I have thought many times when I needed advice, "I'll call Wayne". Now, I will say a prayer and hope that I am making him proud. You all are in my prayers. Carlene Murray

Mr.Whigham was my middle school principal at MLK in 1989-1991.(Class of 95 @SVHS) He was truly a great principal and friend to myself and all his students. He will forever be missed. He was truly one of a kind.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Wayne's death. I last saw him several years ago at a Riverbend School staff reunion in Knoxville, TN, where we both worked in the 1970's. Wayne and I worked at Seneca Valley HS in the late 90's. He was a man of amazing integrity, able to connect with even the toughest kids. He was always their champion. Mr. Whigham was my principal when I went to SVHS. He was the type of principal that knew every single person and always asked how they were doing. I will always remember our talks and how much you cared for every student.

Mr. Whigham was our principal at MLK intermediate school and then we all moved on to SVHS and had three crazy years of different principals and a lot of instability, leadership-wise. For our senior year, they knew we needed support and they called in Mr. Whigham, a familiar face to us all, to come be our principal. There was SUCH a collective sigh of relief and such joy when he was chosen, for we all LOVED him. He was exactly the type of principal that everyone wants and exactly the type of principal everyone should have. I'll never forget that sideways "don't even think about it" look he gave kids and that amazing, genuine smile he had. What an amazing influence he was on so many young people. We are all better people for having known him.

Stunned at the news!
Since I team taught adolescent boys with Wayne at a large state run mental health facility in the early 70's here in Knoxville he has never been far from my mind. What a great man. We had each other's back. He was hard wired to teach the kids integrity, hard work and responsibility with a whole lot of fun and excitement mixed in.
I last saw him 4 or 5 years ago when we had a staff reunion and he came down and stayed at our house. He hadn't changed a bit. Still the same great guy!
Wayne, I pray you are resting in peace in the sweet arms of Jesus and I pray for peace and comfort for your family.

In life Every person you encounter makes a difference in your life, some more than others...Mr. Whigham was one of those people who made a huge impact on all those he encountered. He loved what he did. He cared, he was there to make a difference and it showed...he was no push over but he cared and because of him I am a better person and I think many people can say the same. Thank you Mr. Whigham for taking the time to care.May my children be fortunate enough to have educators as powerful as you!!! Sending peace and prayers your family during this difficult time ?

A truly great educator and even better friend. I was a student at Magruder when you were VP. Without ever embarrassing me by saying it, you knew I had a difficult childhood and not much support at home. You made it clear to me that you were interested in my well being, you kicked me in the pants when I got out of line and sat me down and talked to me like the father figure I needed when things got rough. I've thought of you often and am grateful to have had you in my life. At the time I wondered why you cared so much but now I know you were just a great and caring man. We have lost a wonderful, caring person. I have known Wayne for many years from his coming to Largent WV to the family cabin. I've watched his children grow up. Wayne was always kind and considerate and interested in how my family and I were doing. I remember how he came to the store one day and saw our friend Danny's guitar sitting behind the counter. Wayne asked if he might try it out -- and proceeded to play fantastic blues on that guitar! As we all know Wayne was a man of many talents who gave so much of himself to everyone and everything. The world will be a little lonelier now but Wayne would tell us, "keep moving forward". See ya next time Wayne. I miss you already. Find Danny and play some blues again.

He was my daughter, Cara's, middle school Principal. We both adored him and thought he was one of the kindest, most fun, upbeat people we'd ever known. After Cara's graduation from SVHS in 1995, Wayne became Principal there; and my daughter was so upset with him for coming ONE YEAR TOO LATE for her class! I continued to make banners during football season for the hallways and bleachers, because Wayne said I had to, even if I didn't have a student at SV anymore :o) My heart is broken, and I wish so much I were able to be there for his services. I'm on the West Coast now, and will continue to keep him in my prayers always. Sincere condolences to his family. You were so fortunate to have such a fantastic human being in your lives.

I am so sorry that I live out of state and cannot be there to honor such a wonderful man and educator. I met Wayne when he opened QOHS. My sincere condolence to the family. I met Mr. Whigham when he was the principal at Seneca Valley High School and my son attended. As a Black mother who was raising a Black male whose father was always in the home but usually working two jobs to support his family, Mr. Whigham's presence and mentoring of my son's development and success in high school will never be forgotten. He would have talks with him to encourage him in all his endeavours, and to be successful in all his classes, especially NJROTC and also encourage his future plans to attend college.
Mr. Whigham would always speak about hisown background and how he became a success in his career. He really would always have a smile on his face and was always happy to speak to parents. In 1996 or 1997, I was the parent who sued Mr. Whigham and the school system over the newly instituted student activity fee which I thought was an illegal tax and unfair burden on struggling families like mine. I met with him before I filed the suit and explained why I was doing it and he told me he understood and did not hold any grudge because it was not his decision anyway, it was the school board's.
He was a great help in 1997 when our older son died of an illness. I think he was the one who got our other son out of class and brought him to the hospital. He was a great help and I have never forgotten it.
I think Mr. Whigham treated all the students as his own children and that is why he was a great principal and they all loved him. It is important to remember that he was a Black male role model for my son and other Black students was very significant, and I hope that his legacy will be that some of them will follow in his footsteps. My son is a naval officer with both a bachelor's and master's degrees. Mr. Whigham was just a great human being.

Everyone who has worked with, for and alongside Wayne Whigham is sharing in the sadness and shock of losing an amazing man way too soon. I respected and enjoyed working with Wayne as my principal at MLK years ago. I will always remember lunch time, and the group of us that played Trivial Pursuit w/Wayne, even though nobody actually wanted him on their team!(JK) Wayne has touched the lives of many, both young and old and has made his mark on my world. I laughed at his wit and humor and respected his authority. I have finally forgiven Wayne for the "winnings" I never received from an old Tennessee/Penn State football bet. Rest in Peace.

My sincere condolences to the Whigham family. I last saw Wayne and Mary Beth at our class reunion. As usual, Wayne was the life the the party. He will be missed. The Anacostia class of 1968 has fond memories of Wayne. Thank God for sharing this great personality with us.

I vividly remember the time Wayne supplied the entire faculty at SV with "genuine imitation leather" brief cases. His advice to me has stood the test of time and I'll always be thankful to him for permitting me to attend a conference in Hawaii. Aloha, my friend.

A great man that has been taken from us way too soon. You were a shaper of young minds, a joy to be around, and will never be forgotten. My prayers and condolences to the family.

Mr Whigham was at MHS when I was there in the early '80s as a student. He was always in the halls and always had a smile on his face. He was kind and he really cared about all the students. My prayers are with him and his family. The loss will be felt by many. God bless you Mr. Whigham.

I had the privilege of growing up knowing Mr. Whigham (Uncle Wayne) as a family friend and next door neighbor at our cottage in West Virginia and then having him as my Principal at MLK Middle School in Germantown. He was like family to us and he was a great man. I will miss seeing you at the river. It will never be the same without you there. Rest in peace Mr. Whigham. My prayers and condolences to MB, Chris and the rest of the family.

I was lucky enough to have Wayne and Mary Beth in my life starting back at Ridgeview Jr High School, 8th and 9th grade (1975-1977). Wayne was my track coach and Mary Beth was our team manager. Not only did we have success on the track, they thought us how to succeed in life. We have remained friends over the past 38 years. They are very special people, and so many are blessed just to know them. I will miss Wayne's humor, his smile, and the way he cared for so many, tremendously. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I met Wayne when I was a resource teacher at Northwood HS and he was in the central office. He was personable, down-to-earth and funny! I will keep his family in my prayers.
