James Bowles, a man of indomitable spirit and gentle heart, departed this world on the 9th of July, 2025, at the venerable age of 100. He was born on the 17th of August, 1924, ushering in a century marked by profound experiences and remarkable achievements, not only as a devoted husband and family man but also as a dedicated public servant.
A proud veteran, Mr. Bowles served his country with honor and distinction in the United States Marine Corps, the Army and the Army Air Corps. His dedication to his country culminated in a stellar career in the United States Air Force, from which he retired after twenty-six years of devoted service. He was an original member of Carlson’s Raiders, the forerunner of today’s special operations units and saw hostile action in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. It was within these years that he forged lifelong friendships and imparted lessons of resilience and duty to those around him.
Mr. Bowles' professional journey continued as he transitioned into human resources with the State of Alabama, where he dedicated another profound twenty-six years to helping others navigate their careers. His educational background includes a Master's Degree in Psychology from Troy State University in Troy, Alabama, which further enriched his understanding and relationships with those he served.
James was not only shaped by his career but also by his passions. His ardent love for the Auburn Tigers exemplified his spirited character; he was a truly devoted fan whose exuberance was infectious. This passion mirrored his devotion to all facets of life - be it engaging in yard work that brought him joy or cherishing the companionship of his beloved dogs. A steadfast member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, James fostered a deep connection to his community through faith and service.
He is survived by his cherished wife of seventy years, Mrs. Mary J. Bowles, whom he wed on the 2nd of July, 1955. Their enduring partnership illuminated his life with love, laughter, and an unwavering bond. He is also survived by his loving family, including nephew, Lee Elm and Christine, as well as grand nephews, Christopher Elm and Christie, and Thomas Elm and Carley. A host of great grand nephews and a niece who carry forward his legacy—Seth, Joel, Levi, Asher, Powell, and Azziebell Elm—will forever treasure the memories they crafted with him.
Mr. Bowles is preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Carrie D. Bowles, and his siblings; brother, John Bowles and sister, Frances Mitchell. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tallassee, Alabama, on the 26th of July, 2025, beginning at 10:00 AM. This ceremony will serve as a testament to a life well-lived and a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
