Amy Logsdon Obituary

RIPLEY, Ill. -- Amy Fay Logsdon, 97, of Ripley, passed away peacefully at 5:20 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 27, 1918, in Cooperstown Township in Brown County, a daughter of John Ola and Nora E. Boss Pruden. She married Thomas W. "Biddy" Logsdon on Sept. 21, 1946, in Rushville, and he preceded her in death March 5, 1976.

Mrs. Logsdon was an elementary school teacher in Brown County for 32 ½ years, having started her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse. She also owned and operated Biddy's Gas Station in Ripley for several years, and later in life she worked at Wal-Mart in Beardstown.

Amy graduated from Versailles High School with the class of 1936. She received her teaching certificate from Western Illinois Teachers College in Macomb, and at the age of 56 received her bachelor's degree from Western Illinois University.

Mrs. Logsdon was a member of the Ripley Christian Church. She was also a member of the Brown County Retired Teachers Association. Amy truly loved her community and served it as a Ripley village trustee, village clerk, township clerk and was also the sexton for the Ripley Cemetery for several years. She was an active supporter of the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C., and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. Amy always enjoyed gardening, reading and crocheting, but her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include four children, John L. Logsdon (Nancy) of Divernon, Jim Logsdon (Judy) of rural Mount Sterling, Nancy Jane Schmidt (Francis) of Clayton and Richard J. Logsdon (Sheila) of Virginia, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Carrie Servough (Michael) of Springfield, Laura Gass (Mathew) of Mwamza, Tanzania, East Africa, T. J. Logsdon (Shannon) of Newport News, Va., Theresa Habegger (Benjamin) of Sterling Heights, Mich., Michaela Schmidt of Clayton, Wyatt Logsdon of Virginia, Ill., and James McDowell (Sandy) of Vermont, Ill. Eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren also survive, and she was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her ninth great-grandchild. One sister-in-law, Betty Pruden of Jacksonville, along with several loving nieces and nephews who kept in contact with her and a very special niece, who she thought of as a second daughter, Trudy Bridgewater, also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ray C. Pruden, Hoyt John Pruden and Cecil Pruden; and two sisters, Eva Pruden and Glenna Willey.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Hendricker Funeral Home, Mount Sterling, with her grandson T. J. Logsdon conducting. Burial will be in the Ripley Cemetery.

Jim and Judy I was so sorry to read of your mothers death. I am Barb Altman's sister Ann. I have been to your house a few times and met your Mother on one of those visits. I remember how fondly Barb talked about your Mom. She always enjoyed visiting with her so much. My sympathy you your family. Ann Broch, Greenview, IL.

We all knew Amy and Bitty and they leave great memories. How wonderful she was able (and allowed) to stay in her own home until the time of her death. Condolences to the family.
