Donald McCaughey Obituary

Donald Felix McCaughey age 88, of Quincy died in his home Friday, December 15, 2023.

Don was born October 2, 1935, at St. Mary Hospital in Quincy, IL a son of Felix Anthony McCaughey and Mary Lucille (Moller) McCaughey. He married Kathleen "Kay" (Steinkamp) Johannes on December 30, 1983, in St. Dominic Catholic Church and she survives.

Don graduated from St. Boniface Grade School and was a 1953 Graduate of Notre Dame High School.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 he was stationed in Germany in the 593rd Artillery Unit. He received an Army of Occupation Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and commendation as a Sharpshooter (M-1 1Rifle).

Don was employed at Gardner Denver in the Pattern Shop for 44 years prior to his retirement.

Don was a member of St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus where he was a Third Degree Knight. He was a devoted husband to his wife Kay and to his 10 children and spouses and numerous grandchildren. He loved all of them and attending their sporting events and activities. He regularly attended events at Quincy Notre Dame, it was one of his favorite things to do.

In addition to his wife Kay, survivors include their children:

Tamara Woods of New Berlin, IL; Therese (Greg) Leonard of Washington, IL; Toni (Bill) Hawley of Warrensburg, IL; Michael (Patty) McCaughey of Quincy; Daniel (Gina) McCaughey of Baton Rouge, LA; Mary (Greg) Kahrs of Wichita, KS; John (Kim) Johannes of Quincy; Michael (Heather) Johannes of Springfield, IL; Gregory (Jill) Johannes also of Springfield; and Stacey (Dave) Oakes of Wentzville, MO.

Grandchildren: Melinda Quinlan; Eric Bunte; Lori (Taften) Kuhl; Kyle (Elizabeth) Leonard; Kristin Leonard; Amanda (Adam) Sommer; Wilbert Hawley; Luke Hawley; Emily (James) Leffew; Abby Dreyer; Brady Dreyer; Ashley McCaughey; Joseph McCaughey; Laiton (Kate) McCaughey; Logan (Lauren) McCaughey; Lane McCaughey; Ladd McCaughey; Jordan (Missy) Kahrs; John-Michael (Cambell) Kahrs; Katherine (Roy) Lothman; Caroline Kahrs; Mitchell (Jenna) Johannes; Nicholas Johannes; Matthew Johannes; Kailey Johannes; Madison Johannes; Andrew Johannes; Tyler Johannes; Austin Johannes; Colin Johannes; Lauren Johannes; Jack Johannes; Nolan Oakes and Beckett Oakes. 27 Great-Grandchildren; a brother, James (Barb) McCaughey of Davenport, IA; a sister-in-law Carol Sheller of Phoenix, AZ. Many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Garlene (Fisher) McCaughey; a brother Thomas McCaughey and a sister Mary Dianne Schlueter.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 20, 2023, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Chrisitan Burial at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Don & Kay McCaughey Scholarship at Quincy Notre Dame. Don was a true friend. His home was a gathering spot for all of our friends.We had some great times together. Memories of hidden lake , Toboggening down the golf course, playing cards with Don and his dad Felix were just a few. I will truly miss him,
