Ila Brocksmith Obituary

Ila M. Brocksmith, 97, of Quincy, passed away at 7:44 a.m. Thursday, April 19, 2018, at Blessing Hospital.

Ila was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Steffenville, Mo., the daughter of Seth and Selna M. Walker Corben. She was a 1939 graduate of Steffenville High School, where she starred in basketball. Ila scored 47 points in a game, and her teams were undefeated in her four years of high school.

Following graduation, Ila moved to the Quad Cities and worked at Service Rubber Boot Company during World War II.

Ila married Raymond Kenneth Brocksmith on March 9, 1946, in Quincy. He preceded her in death March 2, 1992.

Ila was employed as the head cook at Berrian School for over 25 years, retiring in 1981.

She had attended First Christian Church in Quincy, and was a past president of the Berrian PTA and a former member of Alpha Chapter 109 Order of Eastern Star.

Ila enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, ceramics and all types of arts and crafts. She will be remembered by her family as a wonderful cook.

Survivors include her daughter, Ila Johnson (Mike) of Quincy; two grandchildren, Greg Schneider (Susan) of Girard, and Mark Schneider (Eunique) of Quincy; four great-grandchildren, Raymond Schneider, Samantha Schneider, Donielle Schneider and Calvin Schneider; a brother-in-law, Joe Brocksmith (Louise) of Riverview, Fla.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Brocksmith was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Raymond. Ila was the last survivor of nine in her family that included four sisters, Clara, Cynthia, Veta and Betty; and four brothers, Harry, Guy, June and Robert.

The family would like to thank Sunset Home for all their support, kindness and loving care given to Ila and her family.

SERVICES: Family graveside services will be in Greenmount Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Disseler conducting.
