There are many stories one can share about Dick. He was my brother-in-law. Always kind, gentle, caring. He taught me how drive as a teenager. I felt relaxed because he was relaxed. He even let me use his car!! It's an honor to have known Dick and to have always been welcomed by him.

On behalf of a grateful nation, we have lost a comrade and hero. I remember as a child meeting Dick at Winking's Store on South 4th Street, his wife June and the boys. He was always giving and trusting the community and country in which he served. My final salute to this hero, veteran, father, uncle, grandfather, husband and dear friend. You will never be forgotten and we are all eternally grateful for your service and sacrifice to this community and the United States of America for defending freedom. God Bless all of you. Thanks for sharing this unsung hero with all of us. He will be forever missed and my prayers and thoughts are with all of you.

I am so sorry for the loss of this wonderful man. I don't have a memory of my childhood that doesn't include Dick Winking. Free double dip ice cream cones on your birthday and a man who couldn't be fooled by you pretending it was your birthday. He knew even 25 years later when I tried. He will be sorely missed but always fondly remembered.

Dick will be sadly missed. Everyone from the nieghborhood has a story to tell. I always likes his jokes as a kid. "How do you feel?" His answer would be with your fingers of course. He has told this one to me, my sons, my dad, and probably my grandpa.

My husband is from the south end and grew up in that neighbor where everyone kept watch on everyone. He truly was a sincere man and feel that also that store was there for a reason. He will be missed.

Indeed, a legend has passed. This man knew all the inhabitants of the south-end neighborhood and loved us each and every one. He encouraged us, and scolded us and fed those of us who needed to be fed... Without a doubt our God has rewarded him with partying and rejoicing with the angels!! ~ Cathy (Crawford) Fassett
