Harold Asaph Obituary

Following a period of declining health, Harold J. Guy Asaph, III died on April 12, 2017 at age 63. His life was a purposeful and passionate celebration of beauty (Beauty is whatever gives joy | Edna St. Vincent Millay). He celebrated beauty in poetry, opera, food, wine, France, flowers, road trips, and the changing seasons. Each first day of Spring he handed flowers to passersby in Harvard Square and left daffodils on the doorstep of the birthplace of E. E. Cummings. With all of his accomplishments, Guy was most proud of his daughter Lillian who meant the world to him. Second was bicycling cross-country | twice. He found joy in his professions, first as a projectionist at the Harvard Square Theater and later as a broker and residential real estate developer. Many properties in Cambridge were transformed by Guy and his business partner Don Sisson and the exceptional quality of their work was recognized by many, including the Cambridge Historical Commission from which they received an award for historical preservation. Along with Lillian and several longtime loving friends, Guy leaves his sister Regina Pfeiffer and brothers Phil and Tom. We will remember Guy through the words of Edna, the sounds of Puccini and Joni, the taste of a big California cab, and of course Spring flowers. Guy was the only person I ever met who was wise at the age of twenty. He always stayed that way.
I feel privileged to have been lucky enough to have known him.

Guy was a great friend of The Edna St. Vincent Millay Society and came as often as he could to visit us at the Poet's home, Steepletop in Austerlitz, NY. He would travel up enjoy conversations about Millay's poetry and the natural beauty of the Steepletop landscape. We will miss him terribly but his memory will live on on the Millay Poetry Trail.
