Kevin Mahogany Obituary
Mahogany's sister, Carmen Julious, told KCUR-FM Radio that her brother died Sunday. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Mahogany released about a dozen records dating to his debut, "Double Rainbow," in 1993. He toured with performers such as T.S. Monk, the Ray Brown Trio and Marlena Shaw, and performed in Robert Altman's 1996 movie, "Kansas City."

He also taught at the University of Miami and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In addition to singing, he played the saxophone and clarinet.
Mahogany was a native of Kansas City, Missouri. He moved back to his hometown from Miami in August, after the unexpected death of his wife, Allene.

My brother was a special person with a great talent. He had a humble, loving spirit and a fierce, passionate love for his music. I will miss his jokes, his no-nonsense personality and our conversations over great Kansas City barbeque. Thank God, I will see him again.

The first time I heard Kevin's voice was on a jazz vocal compilation disk and I was hooked! A few year's later, while vacationing in florida I saw him perform at the St. Pete Jazz Festival. The venue was packed and his voice was over the top. He played with a amateur big band that was super! He worked the stage and made sure the musicians got credit and got to do solos.
I host a small weekly radio show and play him all the time. It took some effort, but I even tracked down some recordings he did with Christmas songs with the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra. I am sad to think of his passing.

I worked with Kevin and his mother at the IRS in the early 80s and was good friend and always encouraged me. He was always singing and saying one day he would be famous. You kept that that promise and made it. I last spoke with him when he returned back to KC and he invited me to come out to one of his shows. Kevin you will be Missed My Friend

I met Kevin when he was flying to Paris in the mid-90s to do a show at La Villa Jazz Club. I was a flight attendant on his trip over to France, and spoke with him at length during the night flight. He invited me to come and see him that night at the club. I invited another friend of mine and we went to his 11pm show. It was wonderful, needless to say, and I felt sort of a personal connection since he had personally invited me. I'll never forget that when his first set was over, he came over to our table and thanked us for being there, mentioning how comforting it was to see two smiling faces out in the audience. It was his first time to Paris and he'd been nervous, and I think we helped ease that a bit for him. It makes me very sad that he has passed. I became a fan after I met him and heard him in Paris. I went to see him when he appeared here in Seattle at Jazz Alley and he was so kind when I went up to him at the intermission and re-introduced myself.

I met Kevin when he was a bouncer at Blayney's. I always joked about how he might look intimidating, but he was just a big teddy bear. I feel blessed that I was able to call him a friend, and follow his career. I took my mom to see him sing at the Signboard at the Westin not long after my dad died.She wasn't sure about going out, but once she heard and met him, she was enamored. Then there were the jazz jams at the Levee. Kevin, go be with Allene, and sing with the angels, as you always have. Your voice will live on.

Yet another unbelievable loss. Kevin Mahogany was a dear friend for nearly 25 years, and I am still reeling from this latest shock. :'(

Kevin was not only a great artist; he was one of the kindest, warmest, sweetest people I've ever had the privilege to know. I feel terrible that we had not gotten back together after he moved home to KC, but I treasure the texts we exchanged since then about his plans.
