Anne Magner Obituary

Anne Frances Magner, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, friend and teacher, was called home to God on September 18. She was 82. Born in Hingham on October 23, 1937, Anne was the third of Henry J. and Mary Curtin Magners four children. She was an honor student and three-sport athlete | field hockey, basketball and swimming | at Hingham High School. Prior to her graduation in 1955, she completed the course of study in Christian doctrine and later joined the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph to become the best person I could be, the holiest person I could be. Anne earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Regis College. Known as Sister Rose Carmel, she taught at Catholic schools in Norwood, Neponset, Natick and, from 1968 to 1972, Lima, Peru. After 17 years, Anne retired from the convent and continued teaching at elementary schools in Lawrence, Everett and Chelsea. Fluent in Spanish, she earned her masters degree in transitional bilingual education at Boston College, where she later taught and earned an additional 30 units of post-graduate credit. During her career, Anne wrote curriculum for the Massachusetts Dept. of Education, worked as the head teacher for the states migrant education program, and presented workshops at schools and colleges throughout New England. Anne was cited in Whos Who in American Education in 1989-1990. After retiring in 2000, she worked as a substitute teacher. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and travel. Anne was predeceased by her parents and siblings, Mary Ruscio, Henry Magner Jr. and Edward Magner. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Barbara Ruscio, Bianca Kaplanek, Henry Magner III, Anne Tierney, Dante Ruscio, Jacqueline Horan and Karen Tenore, and seven great-nieces and great-nephews. A funeral Mass will be held October 2 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Pauls Parish, 147 North St., Hingham. Donations in Annes memory may be made to Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, Office of Mission Advancement, 637 Cambridge Street, Brighton, MA 02135.

Ms Magner, was one of the best teachers I ever had. She was my 1st and 2nd grade teacher at the centre school... now Whittier in everett, Ma. She thought me so much including speaking english as I came from el salvador and only spoke spanish at home. Till this day as I am 29 years old, I still remember her. I am very saddened by her passing, may she rest in peace I came across this as I googled her name she popped into my mind randomly she definitely holds a very special place in my life gracias Ms Magner

I just about Anne’s passing in the State Retirement Newsletter. What a wonderful human being. I met and first worked with Anne the summer of 1976 Migrant Program. We worked side by side summers til 1981. I also worked with her in Lawrence for many years. Smart and straight forward with all she met. She loved and care for her students like no other.I still use to this day one of her favorite quotes when aggravated by those who thought they could tell her what to do, Get LOST..... and if you don’t know the way we’ll give you directions”. Rest In Peace.... you have made a positive impact on all you met.

Ann was one of the best teachers I've ever worked with. She was sensitive to everyone and yet tough when she had to face medical issues. I loved our lunches out. She appreciated the littlest things done for her. I'll surely miss her and will remember her always.

Anne was one of my very best friends. We went way back to our Hingham School days. Together we were proud of our Irish heritage, and we shared through the years our October birthdays, just two days apart. We always thought us to be the great field hockey players. Anne had the gift of storytelling and loved to read as well, willing to share the latest good book. Her Irish wit and humor was contagious. We shall miss her greatly.
God speed, Anne. - Kay

Anne and I worked together at San Ricardo School in Lima, Peru which was named after Archbishop Richard Cushing of Boston. She poured herself into her work there with the terrific students in the new school run by the Society of Saint James and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston.

I was fortunate to meet Anne when I was a travel nurse in Boston. She became a dear friend and i will always hear her beautiful accent when I think of her. I am only sorry I could not say good bye. I will miss her correspondences.

Anne was the first person to greet me and take me under her wing when I joined the HHS Class of 1955 in November of my senior year. She never failed to bring joy and a happy heart to all she knew. She will be missed.

Anne could always be counted on to keep us entertained with her quick wit and great stories. As a member of HHS class of 1955 she kept in touch with all of us. She fought a good fight and we will miss her.
