John sold me my beautiful house in 1977, a year after I married my dream girl.I was a 23 year old newlywed and we were looking for a small house near my parents who lived on Malcolm street in Crow Point. After a month or so of looking around at tiny houses, we met John. He was selling a small 4 room ranch he had rebuilt from a crow point bungalow. His dad Frank lived next door in retirement in another small house they had bought and renovated together.
Johns attention to detail and early American heritage is apparent in every room of my original house. Stunning is too bland a word for what we saw. John had transformed this little bungalow into an 18th century masterpiece. Brick fireplaces, wide pine floors, hand made pine cabinets and mantel, ancient beams in the kitchen from a 300 yr. old inn. As he lovingly explained every aspect of this little house, he must have known we would be the only 2 people to cross the threshold that day because of the synergy going on. My new wife and I had collected more than a house full of our own family antiques and could not wait to stuff them into this little house. Over the years john complimented us on the house expansions, decor and maintenance of his vision for an early american homestead. 39 years later we have raised 3 children, adopted a 4th and today entertain 5 grandchildren in this same extraordinary Riley built home. John, we will miss you immensely and we express to your family our deep appreciation for having known you.

Hingham Universals Hot Rod Club
John, I was honored when you asked me, knowing I was on the board of directors, if I would help you become a member
of the newly revised Universals Hot Rod club. I told you to be at the Son's of Italy hall on the following Thursday night and you would then become our newest member. The smile on your face and the look in your eyes,I will never forget.
You came to all of the meetings and always after
meetings we would meet up and discuss our on going building and construction projects.
Our club is devastated with your passing ! You will always be loved and remembered by us and all who knew you well. You left us much to soon, my friend. From all of our members, we will dearly miss you.

Dear Riley Family,
It is with heavy hearts that Sally and I write this note. We were shocked when notified by our daughter of John's passing. We will always remember John as a good and loyal friend. Whenever John's name came up, when thinking back to Hingham, we always remembered what a wonderful father he was. And, perhaps for that, we will remember him best. Working with John on the properties he bought I often marveled at his good taste and knowledge of of traditional architecture as well as his quest to learn more. I also thought he was a very sharp business man. John will truly be missed.
Fondly,
Steve and Sally Culler

It is with great sadness that I offer my sympathy on John's passing. It s far too early for his happy and generous spirit to leave his family and his community. My family has known the Riley family for many years and I speak for all of us. We will miss you ,John Pat Granahan
