Alice Wolpert Obituary

Alice H. Wolpert of Newton Highlands passed away peacefully around midnight on July sixth, 2018 at Newton-Wellesley hospital after a short illness. She is survived by her 5 children and step-children; Jeanne Burchard, David Savidge, Douglas Savidge, Betty Trabalka, and Jake Wolpert. In addition she leaves 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Nearly 102, Alice had a life full of love, kindness, and understanding. Alice graduated from Bucknell University in 1940 with a liberal arts degree and within a couple of years married Robert Savidge whom she had met at Bucknell. In the late fifties she also earned a Masters degree in Library Science from Denver University. Her love of the written word stayed with her throughout her life. Alice specialized in research at several educational institutions including Mass Mental Health and the University of New Hampshire. Her last position was with the Newton Free Library where she worked well into her eigh ties. In 1969 she married Charles Wolpert and they lived happily in Newton Highlands until his death in 1985. The Great Depression and World War II had an enormous impact on Alice and she was always a champion of the poor and a voice against violence of all kinds, spending many hours on the sidewalks of Newton protesting both the Vietnam and Gulf Wars. She had literally hundreds of friends from all walks of life and it was an extreme rarity when she uttered an unkind word regarding anyone. A memorial service will be held at First Universal Church in West Newton. The date is pending and further information will appear here in this newspaper.

Dear Alice,

You are a very remarkable soul. Thank you for your kindness, your love, the precious moments we spent together. Thank you for everything. I love you very much and I will miss you. May GOD gives you a very special place in heaven. May he covers you with all his graces.
I just learned about your passing and I am heart-broken.
She is one of the kindest, sweetest, most generous people I've ever met. I am not sure what to say Alice, I am heart-broken. May Yahweh gives you his perfect peace.

Love you always

I moved into Newton in 2000 after accepting a job in the area and Alice became my beloved landlord. We had a connection - she had graduated from Bucknell and me from rival Lafayette. We became fast friends. We both loved cats. Because of a family medical crisis, I had to move back to Princeton. Alice could not have been more supportive, understanding, and helpful. Her graciousness made a tough time easier and I am forever grateful.

We continued to be friends over all the years. She was one of the kindest, sweetest, most generous people I've ever met.

I'll miss her. My heartfelt thoughts go out to her family which was the center of her life.

I first met Alice when I worked at the Class Noted Editor for her alumni magazine, Bucknell World. Alice volunteered as a class reporter for the magazine for many years. She loved her alma mater deeply.
At first, our relationship was only through email or on the phone. Her spirit and sense of humor shone through both of those means of communication. I was blessed to get to know Alice in person when my older son decided to go to college in Boston. We shared many visits. Eventually, my husband, both of our sons, and our daughter-in-law had a chance to meet this remarkable woman. When Alice was a young 100-year-old, she even welcomed our granddaughter into her home.
The world will not be the same without Alice in it. I will miss her forever. I've never met anyone with as lively and loving a spirit as Alice Wolpert. Rest in peace, dear, dear friend.

My granddaughter Krishna and I would stop by and say hello to Alice last summer after our trips to Crystal lake. She loved our visits and I stopped by two days ago again not knowing she had passed. I will miss her but will cherish all those precious memories of having known her for 20 years .Vimla Akhouri (FBC Newton

Alice leaves behind many friends. Seems only yesterday the Newton Free Library said goodbye to her! She also managed the library at First Baptist Church in Newton, among many other volunteer duties there. She was a good soul.

I spent many hours with Alice both at First Baptist Church in Newton and visiting in her home. She loved life and all the people with whom she came into contact. She was a Sunday School teacher and was very fond of Lisa, one of my children. She delighted in telling me stories of Lisa in her Sunday School class even 30 years after the events. I will miss visiting with Alice.
