Neil Smith Obituary

Neil Kelleher Smith of Abington died suddenly February 4, at the age of 59. Son of the late John Ben Smith and Rita (Kelleher) Smith, Neil graduated from Abington High School, Class of 1974. He attended Bridgewater State College and Boston State College. Neil formerly worked as a legislative aide for Sen. Thomas P. Kennedy and had been employed at Massasoit Community College for the last fifteen years. Neil is survived by his sisters, Mary Anne Magee and her husband Justin of Winchester, Catherine A. Smith and Ellen M. Smith of Abington; and his brothers, Shawn K. Smith and his wife Carol of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, Michael K. Smith and his wife Theresa of Brockton, Kevin K. Smith and his wife Cathleen of Abington, and Brian K. Smith of East Bridgewater. Neil was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia E. Smith. Uncle Neil was also loved and will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Neil enjoyed his life with his friends at the American Legion, Abington, the Polish Club, Abington and the Eagles Club, Rockland, whether it was playing darts or attending social gatherings such as the meat raffles. He was also a true blue democrat. Neil particularly enjoyed his times being Santa for the Smith/Magee/Connor children and also more recently for the children of the American Legion. It was the highlight of the year for him. Neil was born December 6, the feast day of Saint Nicholas, so you can say it was also his destiny. Neil will be missed and was loved by many. Funeral from the Quealy & Son Funeral Home, 116 Adams Street, Abington, Friday, February 13, at 8 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass in St. Bridget Church, Abington, 9 a.m. Visitation Thursday 5 to 8 p.m. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. My heart breaks for the family Smith with the loss of their brother, cousin, uncle Neil. It also fills with the joy of wonderful memories of times shared with Neil on 4th of July, Halloween, Christmas parties, and other gatherings of friends and family over the course of many years. Neil was big as life, filled the room with his presence, and had a gentle loving soul. My hopes and prayers are that his family and friends will surround themselves with the loving, joyful memories of Neil in this time of sadness as we celebrate the full, yet shortened life of Neil Kelleher Smith. With love and deepest sympathy,

Diane Perry

Paula and I were shocked, and saddened after hearing of Neils passing. What a great individual, and role model to his family, and friends, particularly his neices, and nephews. A class individual from a class family. His presence, and laugh will be sorely missed. Billy Joel said it, ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG....in Neils case, truer words were never spoken. Our thoughts and prayers.

Yes, we have fond memories of Neil and Brian and the rest of the Smith family, and their home on Washington street. Our son Chris was very close with both boys, and they played basketball on the varsity. And a great team it was.
We send our condolences to all members of the family.
