My heart is breaking for you and the boys Elizabeth. My mom (Queenie Jones, former Woodside Plantation neighbor) and I were thinking of you all this morning so I decided to try to locate you all by searching for Nicks, and see he has transitioned. He was one of the best! Truly a great soul who brought joy to all. Loved him. Will be looking for you in Facebook to reconnect. I´m in Greenville, SC. Thoughts and prayers.

I knew Nicks and Elizabeth when I worked (and jogged) with him at the Savannah River Site. He was a wonderful friend, terrific father, and exceptional lawyer. I am so sad to hear of his passing. May God's comfort be with the family he loved so well.

Nicky Williams was a master communicator. I would often read his newsletter of stories gathered over the years from the SAEs of Vanderbilt University and wonder "Is this true, or a piece of his imagination as a fictional writer?" Either way I would laugh, and tell my wife and family "this Nicks Williams is hilarious". He lives on in our lives because we had a chance to form a unique relationship with him. He motivated me to remember stories of Tennessee Nu. Nicky always appreciated the new material being the story teller he was. May God bring comfort to his family and many friends over the near term.

Man, what a guy. I owe my involvement in the South Carolina SAE chapter and a ton of renewed frienships from Vanderbilt to Nicks. Quite a story since I graduated almost 20 years later. It was a pleasure to visit with him at homecoming each year. We spoke by phone many times. You boys have a father you should be super proud of!...Eddie Stivers Vandy '93

Sigma Alpha Epsilon has meant a great deal individually to the more than 1000 living alumni of the Vanderbilt chapter, Tennessee Nu. Through his amazing work to find us all, Nicks has brought us all together again. His thoughtfulness, clever encouragement and endless research and commentary have recreated the institution of Tennessee Nu once again and built it around the memory of a once in a lifetime person. Thanks, Nicks--a true gentleman.

Though I only met him in person just once, Nicks had a profound impact on re-connecting me with so many of my brothers at Tn NU chapter SAE at Vanderbilt University, all through a simple email newsletter.

For the last 5 years, Nicks reported, encouraged, cajoled, and certainly corralled over 1,000 SAE alumni from Vanderbilt, single-handedly bringing us all back home together.

He reported on missing brothers, he re-established a list of everyone in the chapter, he reported on our history, he told fantastic stories that bound us back to our fraternal heritage.

So many friends have been reconnected, so many alumni have been introduced, so much history has been recalled and preserved, and the list goes on and on...

Thank you Nicks. Thank you for caring so much to bring us all together again. Thank you for restoring our memories in so many ways...

Thank you for demonstrating what really matters in life.

I am really sad to hear of Nicky's passing. The work he did reuniting fraternity brothers showed how much he cared for his friends. He will be sadly missed, but happily remembered.

I worked next door to Nicks at the Department of Energy in Washington. I greatly admired Nicks' obvious talents as a lawyer, his cheerful and unaffected graciousness, his clear love of his family, his kind and delightful sense of humor, and his genuine friendliness to all he encountered. No matter how busy he was, and as a talented lawyer, he was always kept busy, he never was too rushed to stop and say a kind word, share a joke, and treat all he encountered as a valued friend and colleague. Nicks made any place he was better for his being there. Nicks also proved on a daily basis that one person can have a huge and positive impact on the lives of many others, and I feel privileged to have known him, and grateful for his friendship. He will be greatly missed.

As I gazed out of my office window on Tuesday evening looking at the magnificent architecture that is the United States Courthouse, I noted that the Statue of Justice had tears in her eyes.

Nicks Williams lived his life with zest, compassion, and service that is the essence of the United States of America.

A great friend, a devoted father, husband, and son, Nicks had that special gift of empathy that was able to touch all of those who crossed his path as he traveled life's journey.

He was a great trial lawyer. His clients were the people of America. Although he left us far too soon, when I heard of his passing, I could not help but recall that amazing scene in Lonesome Dove, when Augustus McCry says to his best friend with his last breath, “By God Woodrow, It's been quite a party.”

Nicki, we hardly knew ye. But I see you now, sitting on a stool, around a table, next to Wendel Edwards, Dave Wilhelm, and many more who left us far too soon.

Glasses raised in a toast to all of us, whose immense pleasure it was to have known you all. God bless you Nicks and may you truly rest in peace.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Nicks' passing and very sorry to be out of town for his funeral. I had known Nicks since he began his work in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Charlotte in 1996. As a criminal defense attorney, I had many cases with Nicks over the last 13 years. His integrity, good judgment, and common sense made him a pleasure to deal with even when we were opposing each other in court.
He had the ability to keep the courtroom battle separate from the personal relationship. He and I battled several times over the years, but we could always shake hands and share a funny comment afterward. His only agenda as an Assistant U.S. Attorney was to seek justice and for that I always admired him.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family as well as to the members of the U.S. Attorney's Office.
I will miss him greatly as a courtroom opponent and as a friend.

To: the Williams Family

On behalf of my parents, Allyn and Cynthia Lay of Columbia, Tn., I wish to express our deepest condolences and best wishes for you in the days and weeks ahead. My Dad and Nicky's father were partners in medical practice in Mt. Pleasant many years ago. In certain ways our families have been forever linked from that association and special time in our lives. Mother and Dad always thought extremely highly of Nicky from those days, and enjoyed hearing about his successes in the intervening years, as did I. All of us are grieved at his loss, and truly mourn his passing.

We were so saddened to hear about Nicky. Lisa and I remember Nicky fondly, and he was a truly sweet person. He was so proud of all of you and we always enjoyed getting the Christmas cards with your childrens' pictures.

One anecdote in particular came to mind when I heard the sad news. When Lisa and I were being married in Columbia, my parent's luggage wound up not making the airline connection in Charlotte. Nicky went to the airport and found my parent's bags, then transported them to Columbia. He saved the day, especially for my mother! An incredibly nice thing to do!

Nicky was a remarkably selfless person. He will be missed.

Dear Elizabeth, Walker, Ross, Davis and Family,

I am so very sorry for your great loss. Nicks passing is a tremendous personal loss to me but I cannot imagine the pain and grief you are suffering, and my heart, although broken, aches for each of you.

Nicks was my friend and he meant the world to me. He brought so much joy and happiness into my life and it is hard to imagine life without my friend Nicks. Nicks was my “wingman” and I was his. It was an honor that Nicks considered me to be his friend. I will never understand why Nicks came into my life, why me, why was I so fortunate to have this man as my friend. He enhanced my life in so many ways and I will be eternally grateful for his friendship. Nicks possessed many gifts but most of all, he was a precious gift to me, and I will miss him greatly.

I have met a lot of people in my life but I have never, ever met anybody like Nicks Williams. He was a prince of a man and had no equal. It was as if he was from another world, whose sole purpose for being here was to make everyone happy. I never thought it was humanly possible, but the man had no ego, he was selfless, he was a "sacred self". He never judged anyone, he rejoiced in the success of others and felt their joy fully, and he treated people as if they were beloved members of his family. He gave nothing but love and acceptance, asking nothing in return. He trusted in the good of all people, lived in the present and visualized a beautiful future for everyone. He held no resentment, was compassionate, open, and always available, and he totally forgot himself in service and love for others.

Nicks and I met almost every day after work, to spend a few hours together or with friends, to talk about the day, but mostly, we just laughed, we laughed a lot. Nicks, you always made me laugh, but I never thought you would make me cry. Nicks never took himself or life too seriously, he saw the humor in everything and everybody and he truly loved everyone. One thing Nicks always told everyone was “love you, mean it” and he meant it. I looked forward to meeting Nicks after work every day; it was the one thing I looked forward to. No matter how bad my day had been, all my troubles would melt away when I saw Nicks drive up in “The Grisswald” and walk in the door with that big smile on his face. Sometime during each day, we would communicate with each other to figure out where we would meet after work. No matter where the location was, he would always say "well, it’s on the way home". Well, old friend, you finally made it home, you can rest now.

I recently looked at the last text message Nicks ever sent me. As usual, he wanted me to meet him after work but I couldn’t make it and he wrote me, “love you man” and I responded, “love you too bro”. I am so grateful I got the chance to tell him one last time that I loved him.

Nicks, one day after my work here is done, I’ll meet you on the other side, after all, it’s on the way home my friend, love you, mean it.

It was a pleasure to know Nicky and to be co-founder of Chinese Disco and Washed Ashore with him. We had a lot of great memories, and had talked about getting together when I next came to Charlotte. Nicky will be missed by a lot of people in the Washington, DC area but will never be forgotten.

All the best to his family,

November 7, 2009

We were privileged to know this good mand for only a few months but he impacted our lives in a very meaningful way more than words can express. His compassion and love for his fellowman were fleshed out to us in a very real and meaningful way. As he entered Heaven's gate we know the Master greeted him with these words: "...Inasamuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my bretheren, ye have done it unto me." Matthew 25:40
To you, his dear family, please know that we care and may God minister to each of you in a special way during this difficult time.

Beloved and respected federal prosecutor C. Nicks Williams died on Tuesday,
November 3, 2009, doing what he did best: trying a case to a jury. Shortly before closing
arguments were to commence, Nicks fell ill and collapsed in the federal courthouse. He was
rushed to Presbyterian Hospital where he passed away surrounded by friends and family.
Nicks came to the US Attorney’s Office in 1996 on a one-year detail from his
position an Assistant Regional Counsel with the Department of Energy. Based on his
experience with complex environmental issues, Nicks was assigned a number of difficult
environmental crimes cases. He quickly developed a rapport with state and federal
investigators. Nicks was reappointed for a second term in 1997 and continued to work
primarily on environmental cases, including a complex matter involving illegal discharge of
hazardous materials into the ground water. During his second year with the office, Nicks
became the go-to prosecutor for the Secret Service as its role in the investigation of access
device fraud expanded into the realm of identity theft. Nicks also agreed to accept
2
responsibility for a new Department of Justice initiative involving the prosecution of
delinquent child support cases.
Based on Nicks’ outstanding performance, he was offered a position as a full-time
Assistant in 1998. Shortly thereafter, Nicks was given a new assignment to head up the
“Project Sentry” program to curtail gun violence in schools. Nicks, as the father of three
sons, readily accepted the challenge and quickly developed a separate protocol for
elementary, middle, and high schools in the district, rivaling McGruff the Crime Dog in its
effectiveness and entertainment value. Nicks spent countless hours speaking to students as
only Nicks could do: with sincerity, humor and candor.
Somewhere along the way, Nicks also persuaded management to allow him to
assume primary responsibility for the prosecution of National Forrest and Park and
Reservation cases. With his steady diet of out-of-the-mainstream cases from our nation’s
forests and parks, Nicks would grin and introduce himself as the “Small Crimes” Chief for
the Western District, an appellation that he considered an honor and a privilege.
Nicks easily transitioned into the world of illegal firearms cases, violent crimes, and
finally to Organized Crimes/Drug Enforcement Task Force cases. And, when the Office
was restructured leaving a vacancy in two different positions, Nicks volunteered to fill
them both. The result of his altruism was that he carried an incredible caseload, including
the monthly indictment of between six and a dozen cases, many of which went to trial. In
fact, over the last several years, Nicks has averaged at least one trial per month and often
several during the same trial term, all the while maintaining his travels to the Western part
of the state to retain his position as the Coordinator for the prosecution of National Forrest
3
and Park cases. Somehow, Nicks found time to take young law students along to give them
the benefit of his wisdom, experience, and noteworthy trial skills.
Never complaining, despite his burdensome caseload, rarely even asking for
assistance, and only accepting help with the promise to repay at least two-fold, Nicks went
about his business as the district’s trial dog cheerfully and diligently. One of Nick’s
favorite lines when asked whether he felt overwhelmed was, “No, I’m just grateful to be
here.” And, despite his numerous contributions to the Office’s mission, he seemed to truly
believe that he was simply repaying some long-ago repaid debt.
No tribute to Nicks would be complete without at least a brief acknowledgment of
his a tremendous sense of humor, more often than not at his own expense. He was the
perennial master of ceremonies at office events, the toastmaster for office farewells, and the
good natured wit who alternated between “stirring the pot” and poking fun at himself in
emails as a means of helping prosecutors retain perspective. And, when it came to
shouldering the work, no one was quicker to assist a colleague by covering a hearing or an
entire week of hearings, usually with his standard line: “Just get me the file, or some facts,
or the name of the defendant if you got that.” No one in our office caused more laughter,
or was better liked. Nicks was an instant friend to all.
Nicks leaves behind his “lovely wife, Elizabeth,” as he referred to her, and three fine
sons, Walker, Ross and Davis, who will undoubtedly miss the patriarch of their family
beyond measure. His devotion to his family was evident. Nicks was devoted to his work,
but always seemed to understand that family was most important: Nicks found the time
and energy to take a trip with his wife, visit one of his sons at school, or attend a sporting
4
event where his boys were participating at every turn. No words of comfort from this
office can possibly fill the void left in their lives by Nicks’ passing. But, they should know
that he loved them deeply and spoke of them in tenderness and pride.
Nicks’ family should also understand that they are not alone in their grief. Nicks
served our country for thirty years. Those of us in Charlotte, in particular, who have come
to know and love Nicks, through our professional and personal associations with him for
the last thirteen plus years, will miss him like family in our own way and for our own
reasons. And, he will be remembered, with respect for his sacrifices to the people of this
district, and fondly for his charm, his humor and his endearing camaraderie.
He will always be our first, our last, and our only Small Crimes Chief. And, he will
eternally be our friend.

Mr Williams was a good colleague when he worked at the Savannah River Site, supportive, intuitive, laugh a minute, and very little he couldn't do, as one of our people called him the perfect executive but he died in court, which is maybe the way he'd want to go. He will be missed by all who knew him.

"Nicks" to most, "Mr.Williams" to my children - he was a man - the mere mention of whose name brought an instant smile to anyone who heard it -kids, lawyers, even strangers. Once you met Nicks, you were no longer a stranger. His genuine interest in others was unmatched. His laugh was contagious and chased away clouds. He loved stirring things up and then calming people down. He was delightful, talented, mischievous, engaged, loyal. He was simply "Nicks." I miss him so.

To the Family of Nicks Williams:
I had gotten to know Nicks as a friend, confidant and constant source of encouragement since my arrival back in Charlotte 3 1/2 years ago to take on a very challenging role in a new career opportunity. Being an attorney, as well, he and I immediately connected and there was never a time that I saw him that he didn't have a smile on his face and always an encouraging word. He was a gentleman's gentleman and will be greatly missed by all of us who admired and cared for him. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.

Nicks was very special to us all at the U.S. Attorney's Office. He was, and always will be, a friend, colleague, moral supporter, ringleader, comic relief, and dear to our hearts. He was a talented and passionate trial attorney, a truly good person, and a man who clearly loved his family. We miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family who have lost a husband and father who spoke so often of them to us all.

Nicky was my best friend for 5 years at Columbia Military Academy. We played football and basketball together every year. He was one tough competitor, but moreover, he was my friend and one fine person. He had such a cheerful, fun-loving personality and he was a "prankster," just like me...kept folks laughing constantly. I salute you, Williams, C. N. (military school moniker)...I will miss you, brother.

To the family of Nicks Williams:
I was not real acquainted with Nicks. I work in the Asheville Clerk's Office but the many times that I talked to him I could tell he was such a nice guy and loved his work. We will sure miss him in Asheville. My prayers are for you and your boys at this time. Look to the Lord and he will comfort you. Just take one day at a time. May God comfort and bless you.

To Nicks' family:

Please accept my sincerest sympathy on this untimely loss. Nicks was truly a gentleman lawyer. No matter how difficult the case or his opponent, he maintained his decorum, his integrity and his sense of humor. The legal community has suffered a huge loss - as of course, have you. I will miss him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Nicks will be sorely missed by the U.S. Attorney and law enforcement communities. He was a great friend and colleague and he always made me smile. I hope he and Judge Potter are up in heaven sharing a beer and funny stories.

Elizabeth, Walker, Ross and precious Davis...words cannot express how saddened we are over Nicks' death. Elizabeth, although we never met face to face, I could tell through all of my phone conversations with Nicks what a wonderful person he truly was. We are here for you and, Davis, please know that Harrison truly loved coming to your home and having "Nicks" dinners! God bless you all,
Linda, Richard and Harrison Dunn

A gentleman, a common sensical, fair-minded prosecutor, serving justice with his every action, Nicks will be sorely missed in our legal community. He represented the Government ably, but always had time to ask about how you were doing. This self-appointed social planner single-handedly improved collegiality among prosecutors, defenders, the bench, law enforcement & court personnel.

I am so, so sorry for your loss.
Losing a loved one suddenly sucks in so many ways.

While I've only known Nicks for 3 years and only in the courtroom, he's always been warm, friendly and fair.

He is going to be missed.
