Betty Regan Obituary

Regan, Betty Jean (Leonard)

October 13, 1928 - November 3, 2022

Betty Jean (Leonard) Regan passed away on November 3, 2022, at the age of 94. A lifelong resident of Welcome, Betty exemplified the determined spirit of her Depression-era childhood and tenacious diligence of the World War II generation. As a teacher at Welcome Elementary School, she taught generations of children the power of education while living her entire life in the house in which she was born.

The daughter of Cletus Leonard and Ada (Koontz) Leonard, Betty was born on 10/13/1928. She graduated from Welcome High School and High Point College before earning a master's degree in Education from Appalachian State University. In 26-years of teaching, Betty's stern but gentle demeanor encouraged countless students to excel and succeed. After retiring in 1989, Betty and her loving husband, Bruce, gardened on a large scale, canning hundreds of pints of vegetables each season and providing the family and community with fresh produce. She was also a master quilter, enjoying her ancestral practice of producing functional beauty from accumulated scraps of cloth.

After Bruce's death in 2021 at age 98, she slowed down some but still lived independently and drove wherever she pleased. Though intimated by technology, Betty conquered email, texting, and the internet on her cell phone. She never lost her sharp intellect and inquiring mind. The running family joke was that she was undefeated in Chinese Checkers.

Predeceasing Betty are her husband, Bruce Regan; and brother, Ray Leonard. Surviving are her sons, Dr. John Regan (Karen) and Philip Regan (Dawn); as well as three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty's spirit continues to live wherever children receive the support and encouragement they need to do their absolute best.

Mrs. Regan was a highly regarded teacher at Welcome Elementary. I was not fortunate enough to learn under her but friends and family who did spoke so highly of her. My deepest sympathy to the family; while they were younger than me, I remember John and what a fine boy and young man he was. I know Mrs. Regan was proud of her family.
