Marvin Calloway Obituary

Marvin S. Calloway, Jr.

May 11, 1927 - May 1, 2025

Marvin S. Calloway Jr., passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, ten days shy of his 98th birthday.

Marvin was born on May 11, 1927, to Pansy Jarvis Calloway and Marvin S. Calloway Sr. in Winston Salem. After serving stateside in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II, Marvin attended High Point College and graduated with a degree in Business in 1952. He worked as a buyer in Purchasing for Western Electric Company for forty-two years, retiring in 1989. He was an active member of Christ Moravian Church where he was a long-time Sunday school teacher. He loved spending time with his family, traveling, fishing, and gardening and was a Master Gardner and an avid reader. From the late 1970s to the mid-1980s, Marvin served on the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education, including a term as chair of the board. One of his proudest accomplishments, for which he took little credit, was helping Glenn High School once again become a four-year high school in 1984.

Marvin is preceded in death by his first wife of 21 years, Betty Largen Calloway; his parents; three sisters, Betty Craven, Edith Blair, and Shelby Ball; and four brothers, Jerry Lee Calloway, Raymond Calloway, Harold Calloway, and Edgar Calloway; and a stepdaughter-in-law, Tammy Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 44 years, Louise Vestal Calloway; three children: Mark Calloway and wife Kim of Charlotte, N.C.; Carol Calloway and husband Bob Burnett of Raleigh, N.C., and Cathey Calloway and husband Craig Collison of Jonesboro, Ark.; one stepdaughter, Debbie Reynolds of Winston-Salem; grandchildren: Charlie Burnett, Alice Burnett, Rachel Calloway and husband Chris Bradham, Anna Calloway, and Will Calloway; two sisters: Nancy Manning and Sylvia Long; one brother: James Calloway; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Thursday, May 8 from 1 to 2 p.m., in the sanctuary at Christ Moravian Church (919 W. Academy Street), followed by a funeral service in the sanctuary at 2 p.m., with Pastor Reed Lawson officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at God's Acre, followed by a reception in the fellowship building at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sunnyside Ministries, Christ Moravian Church, or Trellis Hospice.

The family would like to thank Trellis Hospice and Home Instead for the compassionate care that they extended to Mr. Calloway. A special thank you goes to our dear family member and nurse Becky Page Lanier, whose loving care of Marvin in his final days was truly a gift from God. Condolences may be made online at www.salemfh.com.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your dad. He was a fine man & raised 3 children that anyone would be proud of. Rest high on that mountain, Mr. Calloway.

My mother, Faye Norman Slate, had some great memories of Marvin. Marvin and my mother were first cousins. Marvin's mother, Pansy, was my grandmother's sister. My grandmother was Beulah Jarvis Norman. I recently visited Marvin, delivering the friend's box from Christ Moravian where I am a member. I always enjoyed discussing Ancestry with Marvin. Marvin will be greatly missed by all who knew him. May God wrap his arms around Marvin's family and bring them peace, comfort and strength during this difficult time of transitions.

I remember asking him in church one Sunday if I was the last person on earth to still call him Snooky. I have never seen him laugh so hard. He never answered my question just laughed. Soon after mom told me he didn't like being called that and wanted to be called Marvin. That never felt right to me. Marvin was my uncle, his dad. To Mr he will always be Snooky.

He will always be Mr. Calloway to me. He carpooled me home from Brunson Elementary daily in the 1960s and as a WS/FCS Board member encouraged me greatly when I started to work there in the Central Office. My sincerest condolences to Carol and other family members.
