Myra Myers Obituary

Myra Dickson Myers

Jul 25, 1931 - Jun 15, 2024

Myra Dickson Myers, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully in the early morning of June 15, 2024. Born and raised in Gastonia, NC, she graduated from Gastonia High School, class of 1949. She graduated cum laude from Salem College with majors in Latin and History. She went on to work for the National Security Agency, an arm of the Defense Department in Washington, DC, as a research analyst for two years. Her marriage to W. Earle Myers (deceased 2004) ended in 1987. She engaged in many volunteer activities: Red Cross volunteer; second vice president of the Salem College Alumna Association, and president of the local chapter; and president of the Winston-Salem Symphony Guild, founding a support group for the Singers Guild and later overseeing its union with the Winston-Salem Symphony to form the Winston-Salem Symphony Chorus. Music and travel brought much joy to her life. She held season tickets to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City for 25 years, and traveled the world over hearing operas. On her other travel adventures, she crossed the Atlantic 37 times. She was an avid bridge player and gardener, being a charter member of the local Flower Lore Garden Club. She is survived by her three children, Stephen Earle Myers (Marilynn), Laura Myers Poppe (Steven) and John Dickson Myers (Beth); four grandchildren, LeeAnn Poppe Anderson, Derek Steven Poppe, Jessica Hayley Myers, and Amanda Myers Hartley; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her special companion of many years, Pete Livengood.

At Ms. Myers' request, there will be no service. Anyone wishing to remember Ms. Myers is asked to make a donation to The North Carolina School of the Arts Foundation, 1533 South Main Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27127-2738, or to the Hospice facility of their choice.
