Mr. Robert Derry Jones, of 1419 Eldorado Road, Winston-Salem, was born in Stokes County to the late Murray G. and Annie Dearmon Jones. Brother Jones' earthly travels ceased on Sunday morning, Jan. 29, 2006, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a period of illness. A resident of Winston-Salem for the past 15 years, he was a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy after 25 years of military service, during which he served in Vietnam and Bosnia. Mr. Jones was a former employee of Pellcare Nursing Facility and a faithful member of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church where he was treasurer of the Senior Usher Board, member of the Sunday school (Men's Class No. 2), the Surveillance Patrol and the Pastor's Special Reserve Personalities Committee. In the community, Mr. Jones was a member of the American Legion Post No. 220 and volunteered extensively with Meals on Wheels, the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Fraternally, Brother Jones was a "Mason's Mason" as evidenced by his Masonic endeavoring as Worshipful Master, Bivouac Lodge No. 503; High Priest, Eureka Chapter No. 68, H.R.A.M.; Eminent Commander Prelate, Chapter No. 10, Knights Templar; Captain of the Guard, Hiram of Tyre Council No. 1, Royal Select Masons; member, King Solomon Consistory No. 64; Commanders of the Rite 33rd Degree; Past Patron, Bivouac Chapter No. 530, O.E.S; and Harry D. Hayes No. 122, Knights of Pythagoras. Surviving are his devoted wife of the home, Josephine Hunt Jones; three daughters, JoAnn Dowell of Chapel Hill, Lynn Dowell-Baker (spouse the Rev. Ervin) of Charlotte and Lisa Dowell of Raleigh; three sons, Charles R. Dowell (spouse Elaine) of Las Vegas, Nev.; Michael J. Dowell of Atlanta, Ga.; and Craig U. Dowell (spouse Terri) of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three sisters, Sarah J. Moore (spouse Frank W.) of Stuart, Va.; Betty J. Love of Mocksville; and Cassie J. Taylor of Winston-Salem; several aunts; an uncle; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends including his Masonic family. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joseph R. Samuels officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens with military rites. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at the church. I am going to miss Mr. Jones we first met at the Veterans Administration and then again at Winnie-Dix and then at St.Stephens, all I can say he was a very nice person and outgoing where ever his present were at.

We were aware of Pastmaster. Jone's death, and it was a terrible loss.We want you to know that you have our deepest sympathy. We are sorry that we could not attend the services. We had death in our family also at the same time and hour (Mrs. Thelma P. Porter).
Pastmaster Jones was a fine man, and we all will miss him dearly.
