Ruby Woodward Obituary
October 13, 1924 - September 3, 2023
Ruby Monroe Woodward peacefully departed this life on September 3, 2023. She was born on October 13, 1924 in McColl, South Carolina to the late Beulah and Casper Monroe. She graduated from Atkins High School in 1942 and Kate Bitting Reynolds School of Nursing in1946. Ruby was a registered nurse for over 40 years with a specialty in pediatrics. She worked at Reidsville Hospital in Reidsville, NC where she was the hospital's first African American nurse. She later worked at Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospital as pediatric department supervisor and as a teacher at Kate Bitting Reynolds School of Nursing. Ruby was one of the first Black nurses in a supervisory position at Forsyth Hospital. She ended her career as Assistant Director of Nursing at Reynolds Health Center. Ruby Woodward was a charter member of Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church, served as church trustee and was a beloved Mother of the Church. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ernest Woodward, Jr. She is survived by daughters, Rosalyn Woodward Pelles and Rhonda Woodward-Barnes. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, a niece, nephews, and other relatives.
A Jubilee Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, September 16 at 6 p.m. at Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church. The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, September 17 at 2 p.m. at Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church, 3010 Carver School Road, Winston-Salem, NC. The entombment will follow on Monday, September 18, 11 a.m. at Garden of Memory Cemetery, 5676 Old Walkertown Rd., Walkertown, North Carolina. Hooper Funeral Home,1415 East Fourteenth Street, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Ma´ Ruby
I am missing your presence in my life now, even more.
We both knew how close we were and the times ,private conversations shared.
Being called son by you was a very proud moment to hear it come from your lips.
The nurses attendants would make me proud to hear them express how you felt about me as your extended family, preacher, son, but even more so as a friend . I carried you in my heart as I traveled and the memories we had together over the years. I so enjoyed your daughters Roslyn & Rhonda. You kept me abreast about Roslyn in Maryland & Washington DC.
Rhonda your baby is such a beautiful soul just like you, and it showed how both of you took care of each other.
Rhonda and I became brother & sister by your permission and you made me feel every bit as close as blood siblings. Your respect for me as a minister of the gospel, was so important to me yet being a friend with you and the wisdom you shared with me over the years is unmatched by anyone and I thank you for all that you said and supported me down through the years.
You were an Angel to me and I would do anything that you asked of me or whatever needed to be done for you.
I am really missing you Ma´ Ruby.
Enjoy your journey and keep watch over Barbara and myself while you´re Heaven bound. Speak to us just to let us know that you´re watching over us too . We really loved you and thank you for your phone calls checking on us and accepting Barbara as a daughter of yours too.
I would really loved to have brought you another dinner plate as you so enjoyed , but it was time for father God to bring you home and rest from your labor.
I love you !
We loved you really will miss you here as many others will too.
Thank you for being in our lives.
To Roslyn and Rhonda I know this can´t be easy for you two, your mother was a Super Woman to us all.
Thank you for sharing her with us.

To the family in which Ma´ Ruby adopted me as her son of many and brother to Roslyn & Rhonda .
I feel that huge loss on earth, yes I know its a Heavenly gain.
I just can´t help myself from missing a real church working friend of many years and a Church Mother who had enough love, laughter & life, for all whom she claimed. A true Spiritual and Sanctified woman who had enough firmness and compassion for those that needed love and direction.
Barbara and I truly miss you here on earth. We know that you are clapping your hands in Jubilation singing and walking around heaven as we talked about many times over the years.
Ma I love you so much, and save a seat for me around God´s throne.
