Stuart Thomas Obituary

THOMAS WINSTON-SALEM Stuart Candler Thomas August 23, 2011 Stuart Candler Thomas, 49, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, August 23, 2011. He is the son of John W. Thomas, Jr. and the late Tommie Thomas. Stuart is survived by his wife, Andrea; and his four children, Scout, Bibi, Jack and Annie. Stuart's daughter, Emma, 16, was tragically lost August 25, 2011. She will live on in those to whom she gave the gift of life as the perfect reflection of her generous and loving spirit. Stuart is also survived by his father, John and his wife, Judy, of Rocky Point, NC and four brothers: John III, and wife, Beth; Mat; Bruce and wife, Cindy; and Chris and wife, Teresa, as well as many nieces and nephews who he adored. Stuart attended Westchester Country Day School in High Point and the Woodberry Forest School in VA. He later played varsity football at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA where he earned the nickname "Bus". After graduation Stuart and his business partner purchased an insurance agency in Richmond that later merged into BB&T Insurance Services where he served as vice president until his death. Stuart was active in St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he served as scoutmaster of Troop 910 and influenced the lives of many young men. Stuart loved scouting and believed in the values of scouting. As a young man, he received his Eagle Award. Just this past Sunday he stood with great pride and happiness watching his son, Scout receive his Eagle Award. Stuart's children were his greatest joy, followed by his large extended family and the many wonderful friends he was blessed with all over the world. Stuart was loved by many who appreciated his warmth, ready smile, zest for life and football, occasional unabashed silliness and unwavering loyalty. His family wishes to thank family and friends for their generous and loving support his past year. They are also deeply grateful for the excellent and compassionate care given to Stuart by Dr. Stephen Tatter, Dr. Glenn Lesser and Dr. Michael Chan at Wake Forest Baptist and Dr. Annick Desjardins at Duke as well as the many other doctors and nurses that worked so hard to help Stuart beat cancer and live with hope. Dr. Carol Geer is a special friend who lent invaluable support, advice and love in the past year. A Funeral Service in celebrating of Stuart's life will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit St., Winston Salem at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2011. Visitation with the family will take place immediately after the service in the Colhoun Room at St. Paul's. Memorials should be directed to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit St., Winston Salem, NC 27101; Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27157 and the The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, Duke University Medical Center, DUMC Box 3624, Durham, North Carolina 27710. I was saddened to hear of Stuart's death. I was a colleague of Stuart back in the early '90's. He was so much fun to work with. Always cheerful and easy to talk to. We will all miss his wonderful smile. My deepest sympathy to the families of Stuart and his daughter Emma.

I cannot comprehend the magnitude of the loss of Stuart and Emma, especially after all he and his family and friends have gone through in his fight to defeat that evil cancer. Nor can I understand why this can happen to such a wonderful man and precious daughter. But I believe in God--the Father, the son, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit with all my soul, heart, strength and mind, and I know beyond a doubt that Stuart and Emma are in the glorious Kingdom of God enjoying the eternity that is our promise as believers. That strengthens and consoles me and I pray it will likewise comfort Andrea, Scout, Bibi, Jack and Annie. May God bless you abundantly with joy and peace, Jim Scofield

To the entire Thomas family nuclear and extended, it has been years since I saw Stuart but a nicer man that he never lived. May the memory of Stuart's strength flow into you all at this time of loss. He was one of the truly "good ones". :-) Peace brother.

We are all devastated to lose a most extraordinary friend who embraced life and its challenges fully and without reservation. The love Stuart felt for his beautiful family was obvious and inspiring to all. May Andrea, Scout, Bibi, Jack, and Annie find some comfort in the love of so many friends who share their grief and this terrible loss.

My heart goes out to you Andrea and to Scout, Bibi, Jack, and Annie. Through that gap in his front teeth, Stuart had a unique ability to smile and whistle at life, and life smiled and whistled right back at him. He radiated a positive energy that was felt by all those around him. How I will miss him. I am all too far away but I am so with you at this time of great sadness. Much love, Breck
