Evelene Weather Glin Obituary
NEW ORLEANS, LA/UTICA, NY - Evelene M. Weather Glin, beloved daughter, sister, cousin, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, matriarch, and friend was born on June 13, 1947, to Leonard and Lucille M. Weather in Utica, New York. On February 22, 2024, she made her transition in Jesus surrounded by her husband, children, and grandchildren in New Orleans, Louisiana.
A born nurturer and the only girl with five older brothers, Ozell, Odum, Venie, Leonard, and Leon, Evelene affectionately known as "Baby Sister" to her siblings, and "Aunt Sister" to her nephews and nieces, spent her childhood and early adult years in Utica, New York. She graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1965 and went on to Mohawk Valley Community College where she received a degree in Secretarial Science. True to her tenacity and determination, with a husband, four children and another on the way, Evelene completed her educational pursuits in 1976, graduating with a BS degree in Social Work from Syracuse University.
In 1971 Evelene's life was changed forever when she married her "knight in shining armor" or more accurately stated, her "Sergeant in an Air Force uniform," C.D. Glin. The couple was married in St. Paul's Baptist Church. Her mother, having recently passed a few years earlier, Evelene's daughterly devotion led the newlyweds to start their life together in her father's home at 108 Seneca St. in Utica, with "Glin" as she affectionately referred to him in military fashion, assigned to Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY.
In 1977 military duty called and the Glin's, having grown to a family of seven, began what would be more than a decades long international journey with assignments in Italy, England (where the family grew to eight), and the Azores, Portugal with a posting to Valdosta, GA. interspersed in the international assignments. The Georgia posting was marred by tragedy as Eric (aka Buster), Evelene's first-born son and a budding college student was killed in a car accident in 1986. No stranger to adversity, Evelene, who in some ways never fully recovered from the loss, grieved, and coped in the only way she knew how she took it to the Lord in prayer, trusting in the Lord with all her heart and leaning not on her own understanding.
Evelene had a renown work ethic exemplified by her spotless home wherein "cleanliness is next to godliness" reigned supreme. She was equally active outside the home. Evelene held numerous professional roles, from working at the Youth Recreation Center on base in Italy, to serving as an inspector for military base housing in England, at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia and at Lajes Field in the Azores, Portugal. After Sgt. Glin's retirement from the Air Force in 1990, they relocated to New Orleans where she concluded her professional career as a federal government employee with the National Finance Center.
Upon meeting Evelene, two attributes were immediately clear, her faith in God and her love for her family. When visiting her home, a third passion, in addition to her faith and her family became evident food. Evelene loved cooking. Once one entered the home, food would just appear from everywhere, and all kinds of cuisines, representative of her global travel and local delicacies: deviled eggs, baked chicken, fried okra, collard greens, and turkey necks, all spread along the table paying homage to her southern heritage. And there was always more, large pans of macaroni and cheese as well homemade lasagna, inspired and perfected from years of Italian living; and of course, gumbo, so tasty Louisiana natives swore she was one of their own. Just when visitors thought they were done and free to slowly waddle away from the table, dessert would appear, rum cake, pecan pie, and of course one cheesecake, yes one one strawberry, one blueberry, and one plain cheesecake to choose from, declining was not an option. While she fed everyone as well as any five-star restaurant, when asked where she would like to dine, it was always the same Red Lobster.
Evelene took great joy in raising her six children and seeing them all succeed in personal and professional endeavors. But her proudest moments were not in celebrating their material possessions nor career accomplishments, but rather in their connection to Christ, their relationships with their spouses, and most importantly the grand and great grandkids they gave her. Grandma Glin, Mama Glin or Mother Glin, as she was known in later years, walked daily in love, and found it a blessing and a great responsibility to demonstrate love to others not only to her family but to all who came into her life. She was courageous even in her vulnerability; an empathetic listener who demonstrated her wisdom not only through her actions, but even in knowing when to "give it to the Lord in prayer." She was an inspiration and a beautiful example of God's love and grace who depicted and epitomized what it is to be a woman of faith and a child of God.
Evelene M. Weather Glin was preceded in death by her parents, Lucille and Leonard M. Weather; three brothers, Ozell, Odum, and Venie; and two sons, Joey, and Eric (aka Buster).
She leaves behind her ever-loving soul mate and steadfast husband of 52 years, C.D. Glin, Sr.; her children, John (and Tiffany), Lucille (and Stan), C.D., Jr. (and Jacqueline), Martin Christopher (and Sabrina), Kurtis (and Dayspring); her 17 grandchildren, Terrell and Dwight (John); Michael, Stanley III and Jordan (Lucille); Nia, Malaika and Suriya (C.D., Jr.), Nassanah, Naimah, Ra'ahmes, Kamilah, Makiya, Sahura, Amari and Jabari (Chris); Kurtis, Jr. aka KJ (Kurtis); and three great-grandchildren, Elivia, Nyla and Laila; her siblings, Dr. Leonard Weather, and Leon Weather; a host of nieces and nephews, and beloved friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Baptist Church, 219 Leah Street. Evelene's Home Going Service and Celebration of Life will commence at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will take place in New Forest Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?"
John 14:1-2
