Grayce Sanger Obituary

NORTH SMITHFIELD - Grayce A. Sanger, R.N., B.S.N., M.S.N, 86 passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2022, in Smithfield Woods Assisted Living, Smithfield. She was the wife of the late William P. Sanger.

Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late John F. and Evelyn (Warcup) Carney Sr. She resided in North Smithfield since 1972 previously residing in Cumberland.

She was a communicant of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, Woonsocket. Grayce at one time volunteered for the parish carnival, Parishioners in Need Program (PIN), ESL instruction, Catholic Charity Drive, and the Bishop's Committee.

A graduate of Cumberland High School, The Roger Williams Hospital School of Nursing, URI, and Boston College. She was invited into the Alpha Chi Chapter, Sigma Tau. She was also inducted into the National Honor Society of Nursing following her graduation from Boston College.

Grayce taught operating room and surgical nursing at the Roger Williams Hospital, School of Nursing for 12 years and adult med/surg nursing at CCRI for 25 years, before retiring in 1997, with the rank of full professor. While at CCRI, she co-authored a Student Learning Guidebook. She was also an EMT-A and an instructor coordinator, teaching 2 EMT courses a year at CCRI, and served as an examiner for state sponsored EMT recertification exams.

She was a long-term volunteer instructor for the AHA (American Heart Association), having taught all levels of First Aid and CPR.

She was actively involved for many years with the NSPS. She served as patrol leader at Klein Innsbruck and senior first aid examiner and refresher instructor. In addition, she helped staff first aid stations at various public events, such as the Tall Ships, Newport and championship golf and polo matches in Portsmouth.

Grayce was an avid skier. She was a long-term patron and mountain host for the Bretton Woods Ski Area and had maintained a winter home in Bethlehem, NH. She was a member of the Roger Williams Hospital, URI and Boston College Alumni Associations, and the Bethlehem Heritage Society and was a past president of the Ladies Guild, Delaney Council of the Knights of Columbus.

She is survived by her sisters; Evelyn Faucher and Jane Manahan along with several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Grayce's Life Celebration to begin with Visiting Hours on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, from 5 PM to 8 PM and continuing on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at 9 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Holy Trinity Parish, 1409 Park Avenue Woonsocket, RI. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Hope Health Hospice and Smithfield Woods Assisted Living for the care and compassion provided to Grayce.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Rhode Island Chapter, 245 Waterman Street #306, Providence, RI 02906.

Mrs. Sanger was my med/surg professor at CCRI 1983. She was tough but we loved her brilliance. I learned so very much from her that I carry into my nursing today as an educator and practitioner. I knew she was ill for some time. My condolences to her family. A life well lived.
