John A. Mathisen

CUMBERLAND - John A. Mathisen, 89, formerly of Cumberland, passed away Saturday February 6th in UMass Medical Center, Worcester. He was the husband of the late Irene (Schoenleber) Mathisen.
Born in North Arlington, NJ., he was the son of the late Arthur and Edna (Weise) Mathisen. He resided in Webster for the past 3 years, previously residing in Cumberland for over 45 years.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Korean War. He was stationed on the USS Macala (DD488).
He worked for several industrial companies, settling with Rowe Manufacturing. He was previously employed at Leach and Garner and later Electric Boat.
Mr. Mathisen was a fireman for the Packanack Lake #5 Fire Department of Wayne, NJ.
He loved to woodwork, watch sports and football. He played football throughout his high school years, and was Captain of the North Arlington High School football team. He went on to continue his education at Upsala College in East Orange, NJ. He was also an avid reader.
He is survived by his children John Mathisen of Webster, MA; Judy Gossenger of Toms River, NJ and Thomas Mathisen of Wayne, NJ. Six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late William Mathisen and brother of the late Arthur Mathisen and Janet Meyer.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday February 20th at 10 AM in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road Cumberland. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Calling hours will be held on Saturday February 20th from 9 AM to 10 AM.
