Leon R. Isabelle

CUMBERLAND - Leon R. Isabelle, 92, of Dorr St., passed away Monday in the Mt. St. Rita Health Center, Cumberland. He was the beloved husband of Sarah M. (Story) Isabelle.
Born in Central Falls he was the son of the late Napoleon and Delvina (Pontbriand) Isabelle. He resided in Cumberland for over 50 years previously residing in Central Falls.
Mr. Isabelle was a U. S. Navy, WW II veteran serving as a Gunners Mate aboard the USS Monterey and aircraft carrier, where among his many medals and awards were the WW II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre medal with 10 Stars, Philippine Islands Liberation Medal with 2 stars and received a commendation for Meritorious Service for accurate fire against enemy planes for destroying one himself and helping destroy 2 others. During the same time the future President Gerald R. Ford was serving as an officer aboard the Monterey.
He began his working career at the age of 17 with the former Wiry Joes Cable Co, then the former Crescent Cable Co. and purchased by the former Carol Cable Co., Pawtucket, working as a Wire Drawer for 40 years, he was also the company's first Machine Oilier for 5 years until his retirement.
Besides his wife he leaves a step-son, Edward R. Story and his wife Nancy of Cumberland, two sisters, Theresa Hermans and Anna Silva. Also three grandchildren, Jason and Nathan Story, and Nicole Archambault, and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late David Isabelle and brother of the late Armand and Rene Isabellle, Lillian Ayotte, Lea Lefort, Antoinette Gabeille, Delia Brunelle and Helen Medeira.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Leon's Life Celebration beginning with Calling Hours on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the J. J. Duffy Life Celebration Home, 757 Mendon Rd. Rte. 122, Cumberland. The Life Celebration will continue on Friday morning at 9 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Historic St. Joseph Church, 1301 Mendon Rd., Cumberland.
