Neil T. Broughton

WOONSOCKET - Neil T. Broughton, 73, of Woonsocket, died November 24, 2018 in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. Born in Central Falls, he was the son of the late John W. and Dorothy E. (Buffum) Broughton.
Neil was an avid fan of music. He had accumulated a vast collection of records over the years. He was a dedicated listener to the local AM radio stations. He frequently called WNRI 1240 to chat with Larry Poitras, mainly about weather events, and he called WOON 1380 to request songs and participate in many of their contests. He won quite a few times. He was very passionate about recording his own music making "mixed tapes" titled "The Neil T Oldies Show" or "Neil T's Memory Lane" or "Neil T's Rock and Roll Revival" where he would play a wide variety of music covering many decades and genres. He would dee-jay in between songs with a very detailed introduction of the artist, title, record label, year of release etc. He would also interject with humorous commentary and on occasion for a special treat he would record himself singing along. He added in weather reports and advertisements as well. He had an immense interest in Hurricane Carol of 1954 and the floods of 1955. He was a wealth of knowledge when it came to these topics and he enjoyed collecting an extensive amount of documents and articles of research about them. He often made generous donations to local libraries and the ASPCA. He loved to take trips to Boston by bus and rail. He frequently visited the Old North church, fascinated by the fact the steeple had been badly damaged during Hurricane Carol. He was also a big fan of The Three Stooges and knew the episodes so well he could tell you what they were going to say word for word before they said it. He got a real kick out of them and would giggle in amusement while he watched. He was well known in the community where he spent much of his time at local coffee and antique shops. He was especially fond of The Timeless Antique Store on Main Street Woonsocket where the owners were always very hospitable and kind to him. He was a sweet man with a pleasant demeanor and a gentle soul. He will be missed but fondly remembered.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, December 6, 2018 at 2 PM in Union Cemetery, Smithfield Rd. North Smithfield. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St. Woonsocket.
