Roger Petit Obituary

WOONSOCKET - Roger E Petit 83, of Manville Hill Rd. died November 28, 2017 at Rhode Island Hospital after a short illness. Born in Woonsocket, he was a son of Audidas and Germaine (Forcier) Petit. He was a graduate of Mt. St. Charles Academy and attended Bryant College. Roger grew up in the family business, Petit's Market, which he operated for many years. After the sale of the family business Roger worked for Almac's Supermarket.
Roger was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War, and was a life member and Past Commander of St. Joseph's Veteran's Association. He was also a member and treasurer of the United Veteran Council of Woonsocket, and a member of the VFW Post 11519 and the DAV Chapter 12. Roger had a great respect for the flag and the military, and devoted much of his time ensuring that all local veteran's graves displayed the American flag on Memorial Day. His devotion to veteran's causes ran deep, and he volunteered countless hours to improving the lives of local vets. Roger received the "Citizen of the Year" award in 2002 from the Woonsocket Kiwanis Club and was voted "Veteran of the Year" in 2004 by the United Veteran's Council of Woonsocket.
Roger was also very involved in The Stadium Theatre Restoration project and took great pride in the many hours he devoted to that cause as well.
He is survived by his brother Maurice D. Petit and his wife Dolores of Newark, DE, his nephew Richard M. Petit of Los Angeles, CA, niece Nancy Petit MD and her husband Robert Olivieri MD of Newark, DE, and their three children, Alexander, Andrew, and Lauren. In addition, he is also survived by his longtime companion Lucille Galipeau of Cumberland, RI with whom he enjoyed a happy and active social life and especially appreciated his inclusion in her family celebrations.
Visitation will be Thursday, 4-7 PM in the Fournier & Fournier Funeral Home, 463 South Main St., Woonsocket. Committal Prayers followed by Military Honors will be held Friday at 10:00 AM in the chapel of St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Wrentham Rd., Bellingham. In lieu of flowers, Roger would really appreciate it if you took your favorite veteran out to lunch. Please visit www.fournierandfournier.com for guestbook and directions.

When I was hit by a car at age 5, in front of Petit's store,it was Roger who placed me on his metal counter and summoned my parents and ambulance. He was known as a tall, kind, warm, caring, and friendly man that I remained grateful to. RIP dear Mr. Petit. My condolences to his companion, family and friends. God bless.

Maurice, Dolores, Nancy and Richard,
My sincere condolences ! Roger was my first employer and I have some very fond memories working for the Petit family. Although we live in North Kingstown and didn't run into him as much as when we lived in Woonsocket 21 years ago, I will always remember Roger as the Gentle Giant who taught me strong work ethic, which I've incorporated throughout my working career. Sorry that I will not be able to attend the wake tomorrow evening but wanted to at least reach out to you in your time of loss.

Fondly,
Sue (St. George) Baglini
