John Carroll Obituary
John Michael "Moe" Carroll, 82, passed away peacefully in his home of 46 years on Saturday, April 19, 2025. He married his wife of 51 years, Margaret Carroll, in 1973 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he remained an active member until the end of his life.
John had a warm heart, an infectious sense of humor, and a genuine love for life and the people around him. Known for his many jokes that always brought a smile, he loved making others laugh and brightening their day. His humor was matched only by his dedication to family, friends, and the community.
A proud graduate of Beloit Memorial High School (Class of 1960), John went on to earn a Liberal Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and continued his education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied Philosophy and found a passion for early British literature. He spent the early part of his career teaching Honors English at Beloit Catholic High School, where he developed his love for coaching. He went on to become the Assistant Dean of Students at Beloit College. He fulfilled his dream of owning and operating a restaurant when he opened The Deli in the Hilton Hotel in Downtown Beloit. Later in life, he started a long and successful career with Allstate, where he worked for over 40 years and founded the independent Carroll Agency in Beloit.
John's love of coaching extended to his children's sports teams, where he gave his time selflessly to help them and their friends grow. He also enjoyed organizing historical tours of Beloit, sharing his deep knowledge and affection for the place he called home, which stemmed from his family's deep roots in the Beloit community, dating back to 1843. His passion for history and writing was evident in his many thoughtful poems and short stories. He was also proud of his Irish heritage.
John was a fierce supporter of all things Beloit and Wisconsin. He cheered on the Beloit Memorial Purple Knights, the Beloit College Buccaneers, the Wisconsin Badgers, the Green Bay Packers, and the Milwaukee Bucks. He also enjoyed holding court at noon Euchre games at T and T Sports and engaging in lively political discussions at the "loud table" at Bagels and More.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his children, Jeff (Ghita) Carroll and Mary Anne (Ron) Watson; grandchildren, Isaiah, Miles, Cecil, Paulina, and Kofi; Special Friend Pasquell Wisdom as well as his sister, Suzy, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Lorraine, and his beloved older brother, Pat.
He will be remembered for his loving spirit, dedication to family and friends, and uncanny ability to make others laugh. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and a deep connection to the community that will never be forgotten.
A visitation will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025 followed by a memorial service at 4:00. John will be inurned at the Chapel of St. Joseph of Arimathea Columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Beloit Historical Society or St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
