James Conklin Obituary

James R. "Jim" Conklin, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully at his Linton home on Thursday morning, July 17, 2025, at the age of 82. His devoted wife of nearly 57 years, Linda L. (Engle) Conklin, was by his side, as she had been throughout a lifetime filled with laughter, devotion, and shared adventures. Born in Linton on November 21, 1942, Jim was the son of Robert K. and Elsie F. (Moss) Conklin. He grew up on the quiet streets of his hometown, graduating from Linton-Stockton High School in 1961, already well-known for his quick wit and kind smile. Jim answered the call to serve his country with honor, joining the U.S. Army and serving with the 226 Military Police during the Vietnam era. His quiet dedication and sense of duty shaped every chapter of his life. On September 15, 1968, Jim married Linda L. (Engle), beginning a partnership marked by deep love, teamwork, and support. Together, they raised a son, Chad, instilling in him the same integrity, work ethic, and warmth that Jim became known for throughout the community. For 35 years, Jim worked at NSWC Crane, where he forged lifelong friendships and was celebrated for his reliability and ready willingness to lend a helping hand. Even in retirement, Jim continued to serve his hometown as Head Custodian of Linton-Stockton Elementary, where children and teachers alike came to know Mr. Conklin as a friendly face and a steady presenceâ€"always ready with a wave in the hallway or a kind word on a tough day. Jim was a man who gave back, and that commitment showed in his memberships with the First United Methodist Church, the Linton B.P.O. Elks #866 (Life Member), and the American Legion Post #22. Outside of work, Jim was happiest in the company of family and friends, either out in nature or gathered around the kitchen table. Throughout the years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. His storytelling skills - and gentle teasing - were legendary. Jim leaves behind his loving wife, Linda L. Conklin; his son, Chad Conklin and daughter-in-law Shannon; his granddaughter, Emily; and his precious great-granddaughter Winnie, who always lit up his face with a smile. He also leaves his sister, Karon Hasler; his brother, Larry (Judy) Conklin; and several nieces and nephews who were blessed by his easy humor and steady guidance. Preceding him in death are his parents and his brother, Jack Conklin. Funeral service will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton at 2:00 PM on Monday, July 21, 2025, with Nyle Riegle officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Linton with military honors by the American Legion Post #22. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Linton First United Methodist Church, through the funeral home. Online condolences may be shared www.welchcornett.com. Jim's life was defined by quiet strength, humble service, and steadfast love for his family and his community. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
