Leon Buckhannon Obituary

Leon Buckhannon, 70, of Princeton, departed this life on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Select Specialty Hospice at CAMC Memorial in Charleston, WV. Born on March 31, 1955, in Montcalm, WV, he was the son of the late Clarence Buckhannon and Ruth Stieff Buckhannon. Leon's life was marked by resilience, achievement, and devotion to family. A proud 1972 graduate of Montcalm High School, Leon was celebrated as a star basketball player and made history as the first student to dunk a basketball in the state. His athleticism and determination were evident both on and off the court. Answering the call to serve, Leon joined the United States Air Force and was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War, exemplifying courage and dedication to his country. Leon's passions extended beyond his military and athletic accomplishments. He was an avid fan of westerns, enjoyed working out with his son, and treasured traveling alongside his family. His love for sports endured through his unwavering support of the Chicago Bulls. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, LaTara Buckhannon; his brother, Clarence Buckhannon, Jr.; and two sisters, Belinda Buckhannon and Carolyn Kennedy. Leon leaves to cherish his memory his beloved children, Keisher Buckhannon of Columbus, OH, and Leon Rashad Buckhannon and wife Jessica Ferrell of Princeton, and; six grandchildren; Sasha Buckhannon, Daquon Buckhannon, Bryson Buckhannon, Kaydence Day, Harmoni Buckhannon, and Leoni Buckhannon; and four great-grandchildren; Malique Coleman, Xion Buckhannon, O'Najah Buckhannon, and Roniaj Johnson. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a dear friend whom Leon considered a brother, Reverend Darnell Palmer of Princeton. A homegoing service in honor of Leon's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton, with Reverend Darnell Palmer officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, where the United States Air Force Honor Guard will present Military Rites. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the service hour on Friday. To send a flower arrangement in memory of Leon Buckhannon, please click here to visit our sympathy store.

I really hate to read that Leon has passed away. My husband, Tom, taught him at Montcalm, and I remember that he was always so respectful to him and to me. My heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends.

May you continue to sleep in peace cousin Leon. For we know if this earthly tabernacle dissolves, we have another building, not made with hands, eternally in heaven with our heavenly Father.
