James Michael "Mike" Steube, age 71 of York, Neb., died Sunday, December 8, 2024 in York. He was born on January 12, 1953 to James A and Mary Lou (Smyers) Steube in Loveland, Colo. He was adopted as a baby, and reconnected with his biological siblings (seven), later on in life. Mike graduated from York High School in 1971. On June 15, 2012 he was united in marriage to Sharilyn Kay Brackhan in Bradshaw, Neb.
At 18 years old he started at the York Fire Department and became a professional firefighter and EMT. In April of 2003, he started his 20 year career as a bus driver for York Public Schools. Mike was a founding member of Wild Hawg Riders. He loved riding his motorcycle, camping and was an avid Husker fan.
Mike is survived by his wife, Sharilyn of York; children, Alan Steube of York and Tara Homolka of York; grandchildren, Whitley, Wylder, Wryker Homolka and Ava Lynch all of York; step children, Don Ramsey Jr of Waco, Neb., Nicole Ramsey of York, Tom Alderman (fiancé, McKayla Verhage) of Fairmont, Neb., Shaughnessey Byrd of Omaha, Neb., DeChelly Ramsey of York; and step grandchildren, Dezmund, Dominik, and Dreyha Alderman all of Fairmont. He is also survived by his brothers, Pat Steube of York, Steve (wife, Pinky) Steube of Galveston, Texas; nieces, nephews, bio siblings; and mother-in-law, Patricia Brackhan of Waco.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, December 13, 2024 at the Arbor Drive Community Church in York with the Reverend Jon Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow in York's Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Metz Mortuary in York. His family will then greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., that same evening at the Arbor Drive Community Church in York. Memorials may be directed to York Fire Department or Arbor Drive Community Church. Mike's service will be live streamed on Metz Mortuary's YouTube Channel. Condolences may be left for the family at metzmortuary.com. Metz Mortuary in York is handling the arrangements.

Mike was my next-door neighbor in York. He was always ready to discuss a little Husker football, and together, we solved many of the world's other problems. I was proud to call him a friend.
