Henry Meyer Obituary

Henry Robert Meyer

May 4, 1932 - April 30m 2025

Henry Robert Meyer died peacefully at home with family on April 30, 2025, four days shy of his 93rd birthday, in his beloved adopted town of Yuma, Arizona. It was a place Henry called "The Jewel of the Desert. "

Henry was born in New York City on May 4, 1932, the second son of immigrant parents, Dinah and Paul Meyer.

As a child, Henry learned about the world and had adventures through books he borrowed from the New York Public Library. He played stickball in the streets of the Upper West Side and spent much time with his many cousins. Henry rode the subway daily from Manhattan to attend Brooklyn Technology for high school. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin and then from Chicago Medical School in 1958.

The turning point in Henry's life was when he was set up on a blind date with Lynn Marks in 1957 in Chicago. They married in 1958. Lynn tremendously and positively changed the trajectory of his life. He always felt so like he'd won the lottery that Lynn had chosen him for a life mate.

Henry and Lynn made a fabulous team. With adventurous spirits they moved to Yuma in 1964 against the wishes of his family. But the move turned out to be fruitful. Henry and Lynn raised six children, which they regarded as their highest achievement. They traveled the world from South Africa to Scandinavia from Bhutan to Turkey. Making friends at every point along the way.

Henry was the first Internal Medicine Physician in Yuma County, he started and manned the first Intensive Care Unit in Yuma. He served two stints as Chief of Staff at the Yuma Regional Medical Center and dramatically raised the standard of care there. In addition to his knowledgeable and exceptional patient care, Henry recruited, mentored and supported many physicians in his 45 year career. His work gave him great satisfaction and fulfillment. Not to mention his work greatly benefited Yuma and it's environs.

Henry highly valued education and considered it a true privilege. From a very young age he read voraciously. He was a man of high integrity, insatiable curiosity and deep love. Henry was known for his wisdom, can-do attitude, devoted friendships and his huge smile. As he stated so many times "My life greatly surpassed all my expectations."

Henry was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Lynn Meyer.

He is survived by his six children: David (Gini) Meyer, Susan (Umberto) Taccheri, Andy (Kellen) Meyer, Josh (Mari Jenefsky-Titus) Meyer, Wendy (Mark) Trimble, and Matt (Tami) Meyer; and 15 grandchildren: Alex, Giulia (Quinn), Grant, Isabel, Nick, Claude, Jacob (Scarlet), Brynkly, Noah, Zander, Ben, Victoria, Jade, Haven, and Lulu, as well as one great grandchild: Lyra Lynn.

The family will have a private Celebration of Henry's Life.

Donations can be made to Yuma County Library or the New York Public Library.

Henry, you had a great run! We love you dearly and will miss and cherish you always!

Henry was the best. Both Lynn and Henry were extremely welcoming to me for the small block of time I was able to know them and the family. Even went to Yuma once, about as far from NYC as you can get

To the Meyer family, I had the pleasure to work with Dr Meyer starting in 1988. He was always professional and caring provider. Dr Meyer treated nursing staff as partners and valued us as team members. He was a great teacher also. I met your Mother and learned we shared a name in common. Thankful to have had the Meyer family in our community. Condolences to the family.

Dr. Meyer was so gracious and fun at the same time.
We got certified in scuba diving with Mr. and Mrs. Martinez back in "72", and from that moment on, we all became family-friends, classmates, and dive buddies. We buddy-breathed together at the Abe Marcus pool, sharing not just air, but trust and laughter.
I´ll never forget the man.
Rest in peace, Dr. Meyer.
