Mark Ertischek Obituary

Mark Ertischek, 60, died of a heart attack while hiking June 9, 2007, in Zion National Park.
A memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Temple Beth Shalom, 7525 E. Northern Lights Blvd.
Mark Ertischek was born Feb. 5, 1947, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He grew up on Long Island, N.Y., and graduated from North High in 1965. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Brandeis University in 1969. He married his high school sweetheart, Jacqueline Dym, on Aug. 24, 1968. After Brandeis, Jacqui and Mark moved to Washington, D.C., where Mark earned a law degree from Georgetown University in 1974. Mark's love of learning continued throughout his life, and after retiring from the Human Rights Commission, Mark went back to school and earned a master's degree in biomedical ethics from the University of Washington in 2000.
Mark and his family moved to Juneau in 1974. A year later, they settled in Anchoarge, where he was an attorney for the State of Alaska's Attorney General's Office, Human Rights Commision and most recently the Municipality of Anchorage.
His family wrote: "Mark loved the outdoors and spent hours hiking in and around Southcentral Alaska with his faithful companion, Quincy. He had a passion for obscure books, learning and the arts but most of all for his family. Mark was a man of eclectic tastes and a wonderful sense of humor that few got to really see.
"He will be remembered as a good, kind and loving friend and family man."
He is survived be his beloved wife, Jacqui Ertischek; son and daughter-in-law, Joshua and Aimee Ertischek; daughter, Nicole Ertischek; son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin and Kristen Ertischek; grandchildren, Samuel, Madeline, Anna, Jordan, Julia and Eliana; his beloved sisters, Debra and Tami; and his faithful companion, Quincy.

Dear Jacqui and Family,
We are deeply saddened to learn of your loss. We knew Mark primarily through his and your children and grandchildren,a real tribute to both of you. They are amazingly gifted and loving wonderful people, highly regarded in our community. Mark's loss is keenly felt even by those of us who knew him only through brief contacts and though his family. May his memory continue to be a blessing and may you be comforted with the mourners of Zion.

Dear Jacqui and family:

I was deeply saddened to learn of Mark's death. As a fellow attorney in Anchorage, I had several occasions to work with Mark on legal matters over the years. Even when we were on opposing sides of a case, Mark was a consummate professional. He was always patient, gracious, and reasonable, even on occasions when I may not have been. On cases where we worked as co-counsel, I learned that Mark had both a keen legal mind and a fine sense of humor. He worked very hard at the Human Rights Commission with limited resources. I admired him greatly. I know he will be deeply missed.

With deepest sympathies,

Sue Dolman

Dear Jacqui, Josh, Jamie, and Nikki,

I am truly sorry for this monumental loss in your lives. I remember Mark with gratitude for his part in helping me to transition to a new chapter in my life and for the best sauerbraten I've ever eaten; but mostly for being a much loved husband and father. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. If ever you need me, I am here; as you were for me when I needed you.

The Anchorage and Congregation Beth Sholom communities are poorer without Mark. I was fortunate to experience his intelligence and humor during Talumd classes with Rabbi Harry.
I can only offer condolences, which aren't nearly enough to express my sorrow.

Mark and his family enfolded my family with dinners, hikes, long discussions, holiday celebrations and children’s milestones for the 15 years we were in Anchorage. We are diminished by the loss of Mark’s humor and intellect, his love of the esoteric, of life and of his family. How fortunate we are to have been friends with him. We are comforted to know that he died while enjoying his passion for hiking.

Mark served the Human Rights Commission diligently and was a loyal friend and advisor. His integrity and kindness set an example for the whole staff who loved and admired him. His contribution to human rights in Alaska will endure as will his place in the hearts of all who knew him.

When I worked for the Municipality, I had many opportunities to work with and appreciate Mark both as an attorney and a person. My heart goes out to your family. Mark will be missed in so many areas.
