Thaddeus Elliott Kelly

Thaddeus Elliott Kelly, M.D., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Virginia School of Medicine, died on Thursday, July 2, 2009.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carolyn Turner Kelly; his children, Caroline Mayes Kelly, Thomas Thaddeus Elliott Kelly, Mary Sidney Kelly Harbert; their spouses; three granddaughters; and his brother, Sidney L. Kelly and his wife.

He was born in New York City on October 7, 1937, son of Sidney L. and Essie Elliott Kelly. He grew up in Conway, South Carolina.

He received a B.S. from Davidson College, an M.D. from the Medical University of South Carolina, and a Ph.D. in Medical Genetics from The Johns Hopkins University. He served seven years of active duty in the United States Navy at naval hospitals in Chinhae, Korea; Bethesda, Maryland, where he completed a residency in Pediatrics; and Naples, Italy. He retired with the rank of Captain in 1990.

Thad joined the faculty of the University of Virginia as Associate Professor of Pediatrics and established the Division of Medical Genetics in 1975. He was promoted to Professor in 1980, and was named Professor Emeritus in 2002. Thad made numerous contributions to the fields of Pediatrics and Medical Genetics. His clinical and research interests included lysosomal storage disease, enzyme replacement therapy, neurogenetic disorders, short stature and skeletal dysplasias, the use of growth hormone to treat genetic disorders, the X chromosome and X-linked disorders, syndrome delineation and characterization, teratology, and Prader-Willi syndrome.

Thad was a Founding Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics, President of the American Board of Medical Genetics and the Mid-Atlantic Human Genetics Network, and served on the Board of Directors of the Little People of America, the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, the MPS Society, the Virginia Prevention Council, and the Genentech Foundation for Growth and Development. He served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Medical Genetics, the Journal of Medical Genetics, and Clinical Dysmorphology and Birth Defects. He authored more than 230 articles, abstracts, and book chapters, as well as two medical genetics texts.

Thad helped design and implement the statewide Virginia Genetics Plan, bringing medical genetics to families and communities throughout central and western Virginia through clinics, home visits, and continuing medical education lectures. Thad initiated the Enzyme Replacement Program at the University of Virginia, the first such program in Virginia to treat patients with certain lysosomal storage diseases. Through his work, Thad touched the lives of thousands of patients and families and was much loved by his colleagues.

Thad was an elder and active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, particularly in its mission work. He led numerous medical mission and relief trips, individually and with church members and University of Virginia students, to Kenya, Honduras and the New Orleans area.

Thad loved to travel and was an avid birder, sports enthusiast, and bridge player.

A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. A private interment will precede the service.

Contributions in memory of Thad may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 3365, Charlottesville, VA 22903.

So sorry to hear of Thad's passing. I was a graduate student of Thad's and he served as a wonderful mentor.

We found out yesterday about the passing of Dr. Kelly.

As I reflect about Dr. Kelly....My family first met him at the Beckley, WV genetic clinic. Dr. Kelly will always have a special place in our hearts. My daughter is now 11 years old and is still undergoing muscular dystrophy testing but she will always remember Dr. Kelly calling her "puddin" and being such a caring doctor to her. My deepest condolences to the family of a great doctor that touched the hearts of so many people. Also, my thoughts and prayers go out to Dr. William Wilson who was always beside of Dr. Kelly.

I remember all those years growing up in Conway, especially the High School years, playing football etc. Also enjoyed our visits at the class reunions that you attended.

Words don´t come easy. For 25 years, I have called the Kellys my family, and my heart knows they trully are. The memories we´ve treasured can neither be explained, nor retold. Mom and Dad, Elliott, Caroline & Mary Sidney are and will always be my family. The word "Dad" will always mean Thad for me, and justly so. Mom, I really wish I could be with you all these days. Dad might be gone, but my gratitude to all will only be stronger. God bless you, Daniel.

My thoughts are with Dr Kelly's family, patients and colleagues. The field of genetics has lost a giant: a smiling gentle giant

I am so sorry for your loss. I will always remember Dr. Kelly as kind, gentle he took the time to explain to me about my son. I was a single mother and not knowing what was wrong with my child was very scary and heartbreaking. It was Dr. Kelly that held my hand and wiped my tears when I was told that Jason had a genetic disorder. He was very supportive. Dr. Kelly will always remain a part of mine and Jason's life. My son is now 35 years old!

May God Bless

Carolyn, Mary Sidney, Elliott, Caroline and all your families,
I have been keeping you all so close in my mind and heart this weekend. I am so sorry not to be in Charlottesville this week with you for the memorial service for Thad. I am happy that Steve is there and will be able to participate for both of us. Thad will leave a deep hole in our lives, as such a long time friend with whom we have shared so many good times, and family joys and sorrows along the way. His life of service to others and his zest for life-for seeing and doing all that he could--have been a real model for the rest of us to follow. Your support and love for him as a family is the greatest testament to his life--you have a wonderful bond that can never be broken, by death or anything else. We will miss him terribly as I know you will, but will have many wonderful memories to uplift us.
Sending love and my deepest sympathy to you all.

We are sincerely sorry to hear of the death of Dr. Kelly last week. He was a huge help to us in the early years of our son, Nicholas', life as he helped us in understanding achondroplasia and in diagnosing Nick with a seizure disorder. Dr. Kelly always took time with us to answer questions and help to educate us, and we knew he sincerely cared about our concerns and our son. He will be sorely missed.
