Alvin "Al" Korba, MD, passed away peacefully at his home in Bradenton, Florida, with his wife and granddaughter by his side, at the age of 84. Al was born on July 7, 1941, in Brooklyn, NY, to Julius and Lillian (Cohen) Korba.
Al proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961.
He graduated from the New York Institute of Technology with a B.S. degree in bioengineering. He earned a Master of Science degree in radiation hygiene from the University of North Carolina. DuPont employed him at the Savannah River Labs in Aiken, SC, until he left to pursue a career in medicine. He went to medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, graduating in 1972. He completed a residency in radiation therapy at Washington University in St. Louis in 1976.
He began his medical practice in 1976, making Evansville his home for forty-one years. His family, friends, and professional colleagues were supported by his kindness, generosity, compassion, and infectious sense of humor.
Dr. Korba's passion for transforming cancer treatment from the basements of hospitals to free-standing treatment centers, providing compassionate care grounded in dignity, was visionary. He improved the lives of countless patients and their families. He had the opportunity to establish AFROC (Association of Freestanding Radiation Oncology Centers) alongside a few other physicians, thereby changing the landscape of cancer treatment options supported by patient insurance nationwide. These few founding physicians made dramatic improvements for cancer patients. Dr. Korba served as the organization's second president.
Dr. Korba established the Evansville Cancer Center in 1989 and subsequently built fifteen freestanding cancer centers in eight states. He built cancer centers in impoverished nations, providing radiation treatment to patients who might otherwise have been unable to receive care.
He received many awards for his work in the field of cancer treatment, recognized for his pioneering approach to treatment and patient care. He received an international award for his work on high-dose rate after-loading therapy for cancers. He was proud to be a recognized presenter at many national and international medical conferences.
Al facilitated public awareness programs to promote prostate cancer screenings by bringing national celebrities to the area. He also spoke locally about cancer treatments and the importance of early detection. His "heart work" made a significant contribution to the community.
Al and his wife, Jan, moved to Florida in 2007 to enjoy retirement after years of hard work. They were blessed with the opportunity to travel the world while working and continued this passion into retirement. He loved visiting new places and appreciated all the world had to offer. It was now time to perfect his golf game, earning him two hole-in-ones and one net hole-in-one! He loved Broadway shows and sang backup to many big names. Visiting with friends and family was paramount. The house was seldom empty of guests, graciously welcomed and hosted. Through it all, he enjoyed his dogs. He was a kind and gentle man who loved being with his friends and family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Janice (Hupp) Korba; sons, Randy (Pearl) Korba, Scott (Celeste Waters) Korba, and Jason (Claudina) Coulter; his sister, Michele Korba Yarnell; granddaughter, Hannah Dedo; and great-grandchildren, Halli, Sammy, and Ziva. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and close family friends also survive him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Lillian Korba; his stepdaughter, Abbey Coulter; his brother, Ronald Korba; and his nephew, Matthew Yarnell.
