August Blume Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Feb. 10 to Feb. 11, 2009.

August G. Blume

August Blume, 82, of Charlottesville, known to his friends as "Augie", died peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2009, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

He is survived by his longtime and loving companion, renowned art writer, Ruth Latter, and many dear friends, scattered around the globe.

He was born September 27, 1927, in Bronx, New York, the son of the late Louis Gerard Blume and Ruth Gertrude Leona Woolsey, and was the widower of Nancy Moran Blume who died in December 1993.

Growing up in Baltimore, he attended private and public schools there, followed by Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and New York Technical Institute in Baltimore. Augie served in the United States Navy as an aviation ordnance man during World War II and the Korean War. He was keenly interested in the history of early military aviation for well over 50 years. Since the mid-1960s, he studied the Russian air fleet of World War I. He traveled to Russia to search for material in the archives and became a recognized expert of Russian aviation history of World War I. His research culminated in the 2-volume book, "The Russian Military Air Fleet in World War One" that will be published by Schiffer Military History in June of this year.

Augie had many articles in "Cross and Cockade U.S," "Avions" and "Over the Front." Until his untimely death he was actively researching the early military aviation of Romania and Ukraine, of the White and Red Russian forces and the Allied Intervention in Russia from 1918 until 1920. He was a member, and served on the boards of the "League of World War I Aviation Historians" and the publication "World War I Aero" and was a member of the "Charlottesville Aviation Luncheon Club".

August's other hobby was Jazz. He was one of the founders of the Interracial Jazz Society as part of the Civil Rights movement in Baltimore from 1954 until 1957 and was a member of the NAACP and the Congress on Racial Equality. His interview with John Coltrane was published in "Jazz Review". He worked for the recording industry and was the Upper Midwest Promotion Manager for Columbia Records and later the National Promotion Manager for RCA. After his retirement and move to Charlottesville he became an active member of the local Jazz Club.

Augie spoke often of the importance of being a Positive Force in the Universe.

Quote From Augie:

"Came across something that rang my chimes,

pass it along for what it's worth.

A Sanskrit verse - For the one that is born, death is certain, and certain is birth for the one who has died. Therefore for what is unavoidable, thou shouldst not grieve.

Talk to you soon. Stay Tuned. Augie"

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, February 12, 2009, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, 201 North 1st Street.

God bless you, Augie. Without you, the Youngbloods would never have achieved the success that " Get Together" brought us. I can't count the times I have told the story in interviews over the years. It's the story of a man willing to stand by his convictions, even when the odds are stacked against him. Love you and see you on the other side....Jesse

My brother Leo and I had the great pleasure and honor of meeting and working with August while we researched the life and aviation career of our father, Lev Konstantinovitch Wologodzew, a Russian pilot in WWI. We are grateful for the amount of information he was able to share with us about our father. We were able to return the favor by doing research for him about Russian pilots at the Yale Library. He impressed us with his great energy, enthusiasm and cheerfulness. Our sympathy to Ruth and his family. Very sincerely, Walter Wolog (Vladimir Lvovitch Wologodzew) and Leo

August was a great friend for years. We have done a lot on our researches on the Great War early aviation. I was more that happy to assist him as a historian and his personal translator. But unfortunately we have not been in time to finish some of our projects. He was really friendly and honest man. I miss him. Take care yourself Ruth. Augie always told only the best words about you. Rest with peace dear Augie.

I had the pleasure of working with Augie in the music business on many projects over a number of years. He and I compiled the first computerized listing of all of the radio stations in the country with their format and contact information. Augie had more enthusiasm for life and music than anyone I've ever met. It was an honor to know him.

My family and I have had a great privilege to know August. He was a truly remarkable human being. His knowledge of the early Russian and Eastern European aviation history was truly unique. Rest in peace, my friend. My heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy go out to Ruth.

Augie was a great promotion man from a great era in the music business. He was also gracious, tenacious, and welcoming. As a green promotion rep in Milwaukee in 1969-1970, Augie visited "my" city and quickly saw how I could improve as a promotion rep and then proceeded to give me a personal education on the topic at hand. I had the chance to visit his home, I believe it was in San Rafael or San Anselmo or some other "San" in Marin and found that anyone who came through the door was treated as an honored guest. Although the phrase is a little shop worn, the sentiment is absolutely true: We'll not see his kind come this way again and I am forever grateful to have worked with one of the greats. My thoughts are with Ruth and family and friends.

I met on August Blume through a mutual interest in the study of the Great War - all of our correspondence was over the Internet.

He was a modest man of great knowledge on military aviation; especially on the Eastern Front.

My last contact with him was on his next new website on the Great War.

A good man who will be missed by a wide range of people.

I never met August, but recently got to know him through his connection with WWI Aero. My sincere condolences go out to all of those close to him, and especially to Ruth. He spoke highly of you every time we talked on the phone.

Augie was a great scholar of Russian aviation history, who made a significant and lasting contribution to history.

His work also memoralizes all those aviators, who loved airplanes and flying but died testing early model aircraft.

My deepest sympathy goes to his companion and friends. We will all miss him, but I trust he is flying well above the horizon now.

Augie will be fondly remembered and sadly missed. A fellow jazz fan who made a lasting contribition on a personal level, and on the local and national music scene.
