Eric L. Allton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
One recent weekend, Eric L. Allton''s wife and her mother got a flat tire. At first, they worried they wouldn''t have the right equipment to fix it. But then they remembered that before Eric left for war, he made sure his wife would be OK in any situation. Sure enough, "There was the right sized lug nut wrench, and a full-sized spare," said his wife, Christina. Allton, 34, died Sept. 26 in a mortar attack in Ramadi, Iraq. He was stationed in South Korea. Eric and Christina met in Germany when she was working as a cashier at a base store and he was a soldier who kept showing up every day, even though it was pretty clear he wasn''t there to buy anything. Soon they were exploring castles on the Rhine River together and sharing pizzas. Allton got a bachelor''s degree at the University of Maryland. He loved mint chocolate chip ice cream, made delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and had a good ear when it came to playing the guitar. He also is survived by his two sons, Harrison and Hunter. Eric''s last gift to Christina was a bouquet of white roses he sent the week before he died.

I know it has been 12 years since your passing, but I still love you and still find myself missing you! You were a great soldier that I was proud of. I loved hearing about your day, but most how you helped your fellow soldiers. You were a wonderful husband and great dad. Thank you!

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Allton Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Eric L. Allton US Army Captain. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

Wow, nearly 11 years since you left us Eric.
Thought about you yesterday on Memorial day and it makes me sad to see how all this pointless fighting only takes away from our humanity and never gives us anything positive.
Every day that passes makes it more difficult to see how any of this is worth it.
I'm not a religious man, so I don't believe you'll get these messages, but as I am often in life, I may be wrong and hope you know you are missed, even now so many years later.
Take care pal.

I knew Eric in Augsburg and Darmstadt, Germany. We both shared a love of military history and we talked more about the local Kasernes and such most of the time on shift when we were not working. He was one of the good guys I got to know and the only person I know that died in Iraq. I think of him every Memorial Day. It is such a loss for all that knew him. My heart goes out to his family and sons that will not have him in their lives anymore. I still have photos of our trip to Verdun when he was climbing all over inside the forts in those places you were not supposed to go. He was always happy to help even when he was hurting and always with a smile. I am thankful that he called me friend. I am sorry he is gone and that it has taken me so long to write some to his family and freinds about what a good friend he was. Thanks.

I was the Brigade Chaplain for Eric's unit. I had lunch with him the day before he was killed. It has been almost five years, and he is still greatly missed. I pray that you are all coping ok with this tragedy. He touched many Soldiers lives, including mine. I am grateful for his service, dedication to duty, and ultimate sacrifice. The Anbar Province is quite stable now. Let us be hopeful that such brave committment will continue to bear fruit. Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Eric, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Capt. Eric L. Allton our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Eric. And to Eric it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Eric, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,385 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Eric’s family and loved ones.

To the family and friends of Capt. Eric L. Allton: Please accept my heartfelt sympathy concerning the loss of Eric. Every time I come across another name and another face of one of our fallen my heart truly hurts. I did not know your son, husband or father, but I do know the spirit my son carries with him every day of his life as a member of the U.S. Army. I do know the substance that all his friends are made of and that is true grit. Thank you Capt. Allton for your ultimate sacrifice from one Army family to another. You efforts will never be forgotten! Please hold my son, Spc. Crockett Fowler Butler, in your thoughts and prayers as he awaits deployment from Ft. Sill, Ok.

August 13, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend (KIA on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I knew Eric in Korea in 2003. I was in charge of accepting a long and complicated report each month from Army units close to the DMZ. Turn-in was a day-long process involving many soldiers and many problems. Eric submitted the report for his unit, correctly and on time.

But he also helped other soldiers who were not as adept, and he did it cheerfully. Despite the stress and frustration of those long days, Eric remained calm and gracious. During a typical day I might deal with 50 soldiers, and I have forgotten most or can remember perhaps only their face. Eric stood out because of his positive attitude and selflessness.
