Bill and I were friends and classmates in Scottsbluff. We had lost touch after graduation but when my husband recently passed away, Bill was one of the first to extend sympathy and encouraging words to me. I now extend my sympathy and prayers to his family. I am so sorry to hear of Bill's death. He will be missed.

Bill and I worked together at the Contra Costa Times in the early 80's with Jack Winning, Nancy Ward and the rest of the crew. It was an exciting time. We were in pursuit of excellence and we won many awards. Bill ran the copy desk with an iron hand in a velvet glove and was an island of sanity for me as the new real estate editor. He was a great newsman and he'll be greatly missed. Please convey my regards to his family.

I met Bill Brand and his brother Dick back in 1940's, after WWII ended. We attended Victory Hill School together, and I knew his dad too.

I attended Scottsbluff High School and Scottsbluff Jr College with Bill Brand. I last saw him in the spring of 1957.

I also knew his first wife, Janice Ann Johnson, and her family. I would like to send my condolences to that family as well.

He was a very nice person. A friend of mine, just notified me of Bill's demise, and I am very sad for the family.

I want to send my best wishes and condolences to his entire family.

We knew Bill from the craftbrewing industry and always enjoyed both his company and regular beer articles. Many brewers and beer appreciators will be saddened to learn of Bill’s passing. From a personal perspective, Bill made a huge difference in my life and career. Bill was one of the judges of our first nationally award-winning beer, Poor Richard’s Ale. Bill provided me invaluable feedback and support. Since then, we’d stayed in contact mostly by email and we were hoping to catch-up at the next beer festival. Wishing his family and friends our sincerest condolences on the loss.

Bill was the consummate pro, and a funny, funny guy. He invariably saw the humor in everything that came across his path. I first met Bill in the spring of 1972 at the old San Leandro Morning News, and he became a lifelong friend as well as sage mentor and able manager. He will be missed. Dearest Daryl and family,
I have fond memories of Bill bringing his children to the doctor's office for Well Baby checks and when they were ill as well. He was a very soft spoken caring father. I especially send my deepest condolences to Amanda and Zachary. I was the nurse that gave you many immunizations while you were growing up.

There has always been a special place within my fondest memories of your family. Especially your Father and of course your Mom, Daryl.

I worked with Bill at the business desk of the Oakland Tribune in the 1980s. He taught me how to edit stories, write headlines, really jazz up a story. He had a nose for news, knew what information to get and how to package it. He was loaded with energy. I learned so much from him. My heart goes out to his family and friends. He was a great teacher, a great journalist, and an all-around great guy.

Bill was truly a beer maven. His weekly reports were greatly anticipated each and every Weds. The fact that he was killed while reporting on a beer event just showed the dedication of the man. I worked with Bill at the Contra Costa Times when I was just getting started, back in the 70s. He had little patience for stupidity but a capacity to laugh and help someone new understand how to get a paper out. He was my copy desk chief. I had exchanged emails with him a few months ago and we were going to meet in Marin for a beer at Moylans. My heart breaks at this news and my sympathies go out to his wife and family.

When Bill began writing his beer column for the San Jose Mercury News, I was fortunate to be his editor. His care and his pleasure in his subject came through in every column. Bill worked hard for his readers and he taught me so much about beer. When I left the paper for the American Heart Assocciation, I stayed on the Beer of the Week mailing list as a way to keep in touch with a kind and gentle man.

I had the honor and great fun of working with Bill, and he was game to do anything to get the story. On the night of the firestorm that killed 25 people and destroyed 3,000 homes. Bill and I drove around the Oakland and Berkeley hills, reporting. We tried nine times to get past firefighters and finally wound up on Route 24, which had walls of flames on both sides. He was mesmerized and worked the details into his piece. Bill was a true newsman and a great pal, looking out for those around him. My thoughts are with his family.

I have never felt so bad about someone's passing as I did at the news of Bill's. When I read he was 70 years old I was floored. I so looked forward to his columns every week and his blog was full of energy and passion that you might expect from a twenty year old. The world's loss is heavens' gain! It's hard to imagine a story that captures the life of Bill Brand since he was always the one doing the writing with such a quick eye for what mattered. As a newsman, a husband father, and a friend, Bill was one of those people who always had time for everyone. He was a hard worker but he also seemed to enjoy the challenges that sent everyone else into a frenzy. Bill and his family were always there for us and our family and we remember all the good times and great kindness. Thanks Bill for all you did for all of us.

Bill Brand was a sweetheart! He and his family were so generous with my children when we lived at Northgate. They even shared Ringo, Amanda's fiesty Welsh Mountain pony with my daughter, Brianna.
It wasn't until we "petsat" the equine menagerie that I truly appreciated the energy and multitasking skills of this couple.

I remember how giddy and obviously in love Daryl and Bill were. And he so clearly adored Amanda. I can't even imagine how tough this sudden loss must be for them.

I know Bill will be missed by all those he touched:(

Our family met Bill when the girls were at Beth El preschoool. I worked with Bill in the Tribune Berkeley bureau in early 1992. He was a great guy, a class act and a very thoughtful, talented journalist. He was one of the reporters who typified the "can-do" attitude of the Trib in those days. We were short on resources but rich talent. And Bill was a key part of that. I first met Bill over 20 years ago when I started working with the founders of Celebrator Beer News. As a "real" journalist, Bill was an inspiration for his dedication to the beer scene and his discipline in getting the story out. Wow my thoughts and prayers go out to the brand family. The writer of many great beer articles will be greatly missed. I learned of his talent from an up and coming great in his own right.

Very sad day. I'd met with Bill many times of over the years I've been in the brewing industry. He always had a keen interest in what I was doing and what I was up to. I always enjoyed talking with him about beer.

I'm so sad to hear that Bill has passed. Although I have known him online for some time, I feel lucky that I was able to meet him in person finally just 2 weeks ago. The spirit and joy that showed in his writing was just that much more engaging and entertaining in person. He was a sweet person that I wish I could have spent more time with.

We will miss you Bill. My thoughts and condolences to your family.

Bill and I worked Saturdays together at Trib. He was the go-to guy, that's for sure. He sat next to me when he came in during the week. He was one of my favorite people. I will miss him greatly.

Bill Brand was a marvelous pioneering writer for the beer community. He was a better man than writer, and he was a wonderful scribe. I last clinked glasses with him 2 short weeks ago. I never really had a chance to know of him until I saw the unfortunate news of his accident. I am more saddened now knowing that his continued work will be no more, thus depriving generations to come of an educated voice. God speed you on your journey "Bill", you will be missed.
