I went to Henry Clay School and WFB High School. I remember Mr. Brand very fondly. I learned a lot from him on and off the court. He was a great man.

Bill and I were friends and classmates in Scottsbluff. We had lost touch after graduation but when my husband recently passed away, Bill was one of the first to extend sympathy and encouraging words to me. I now extend my sympathy and prayers to his family. I am so sorry to hear of Bill's death. He will be missed.

I was a classmate of Bill's and am sorry to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you in his family. Nancy (Chapman) Hoagland

Bill and I worked together at the Contra Costa Times in the early 80's with Jack Winning, Nancy Ward and the rest of the crew. It was an exciting time. We were in pursuit of excellence and we won many awards. Bill ran the copy desk with an iron hand in a velvet glove and was an island of sanity for me as the new real estate editor. He was a great newsman and he'll be greatly missed. Please convey my regards to his family.

Bill: Many thanks for letting me take photos for your Great American Beer Festival columns (2004-2008). I appreciated being a part of your team. I’m going to miss your wit and banter. I’m glad we had the chance to celebrate together. Farewell, my friend.

I have only been in the Bay Area a couple of years, but I really enjoyed Bill's column! As a beer connoisseur, I read Bill's column to get information on places to buy great beer! I will miss him dearly.....Rest In Peace, Bill!

I met Bill Brand and his brother Dick back in 1940's, after WWII ended. We attended Victory Hill School together, and I knew his dad too.

I attended Scottsbluff High School and Scottsbluff Jr College with Bill Brand. I last saw him in the spring of 1957.

I also knew his first wife, Janice Ann Johnson, and her family. I would like to send my condolences to that family as well.

He was a very nice person. A friend of mine, just notified me of Bill's demise, and I am very sad for the family.

I want to send my best wishes and condolences to his entire family.

We knew Bill from the craftbrewing industry and always enjoyed both his company and regular beer articles. Many brewers and beer appreciators will be saddened to learn of Bill’s passing. From a personal perspective, Bill made a huge difference in my life and career. Bill was one of the judges of our first nationally award-winning beer, Poor Richard’s Ale. Bill provided me invaluable feedback and support. Since then, we’d stayed in contact mostly by email and we were hoping to catch-up at the next beer festival. Wishing his family and friends our sincerest condolences on the loss.

And, we raise our glasses in honor of Bill.
Cheers from Pagosa Brewing!

We're going to miss you Bill. For the last 20 years you've been a great friend and supporter of the Craft beer scene.
The Staff of Pacific Coast Brewing Company always awaited the incite of your weekly beer column.
We will miss your smiling face and humor.
I guess I'll need to find a new web pen pal to exchange questionable beer adverts with.
My condolences to Bill's Family.

Bill was the consummate pro, and a funny, funny guy. He invariably saw the humor in everything that came across his path. I first met Bill in the spring of 1972 at the old San Leandro Morning News, and he became a lifelong friend as well as sage mentor and able manager. He will be missed. My sympathies to the Brand family.

Dearest Daryl and family,
I have fond memories of Bill bringing his children to the doctor's office for Well Baby checks and when they were ill as well. He was a very soft spoken caring father. I especially send my deepest condolences to Amanda and Zachary. I was the nurse that gave you many immunizations while you were growing up.

There has always been a special place within my fondest memories of your family. Especially your Father and of course your Mom, Daryl.

My deepest sympathy go out to the Brand family. May God Bless you.

A big hug to you Daryl. An exceptional woman with a wonderful smile. Take care.
Again, I am sorry to hear about Bill's passing.

Very sincerely,
Ann Horiuchi

My prayers and condolences go out to the Brand family. I did not personally know Bill but I have been working with his wife (Daryl) for the past five years and she is truly a warm beautiful person and because of that I am sure that Bill was the same. I wish I would have had the pleasure of knowing him. Again, I am sorry for your loss and God Bless you.

When I served on the Berkeley City Council in the 80s, I knew Bill was the one reporter who would get the story right, and not be interested in simply making everything seem ludicrous -- a true reporter.

February 25, 2009

Sorry to hear of Bill's death. Read his column every week. Missed not seeing it last week. Enjoyed giving his weekly recommendations a try.Prost to you Bill.

I worked with Bill at the business desk of the Oakland Tribune in the 1980s. He taught me how to edit stories, write headlines, really jazz up a story. He had a nose for news, knew what information to get and how to package it. He was loaded with energy. I learned so much from him. My heart goes out to his family and friends. He was a great teacher, a great journalist, and an all-around great guy.

Bill was truly a beer maven. His weekly reports were greatly anticipated each and every Weds. The fact that he was killed while reporting on a beer event just showed the dedication of the man. My condolances go out to his family and friends of which there are many. Faire thee well Bill and thank you for all of the fine reporting over the years. You will be missed.

Never met the man but followed his passionate blog after my visits to the SF area led me to it just to keep up with the bay area's beery happenings. And his "Who the hell is Struise to be the #1 brewery in the world!?!?" stories started up a nice geek firestorm for sure.

Condolences to his family and close friends.

February 24, 2009

Bill, it was a pleasure to meet you at the Dry-Hopping Festival in SF in 2006. CAMRA Brussels was proud to include your beer column in our newsletters.

February 23, 2009

I worked with Bill at the Contra Costa Times when I was just getting started, back in the 70s. He had little patience for stupidity but a capacity to laugh and help someone new understand how to get a paper out. He was my copy desk chief. I had exchanged emails with him a few months ago and we were going to meet in Marin for a beer at Moylans. My heart breaks at this news and my sympathies go out to his wife and family.

How sad that one of the best beer writers of all time met such a tragic end on the way home from a gig. My deepest condolences to his family and to the beer world.

I share everyone's sadness as I write this note to Daryl and Bill's family. Bill made working at the Oakland Tribune joyful. His positive energy, friendly openness and zeal for quality reporting and excellent writing inspired everyone. He brightened up the newsroom everytime he walked in and he will be greatly missed. All of us who know him are better for it.

Julie Kaufmann

February 22, 2009

When Bill began writing his beer column for the San Jose Mercury News, I was fortunate to be his editor. His care and his pleasure in his subject came through in every column. Bill worked hard for his readers and he taught me so much about beer. When I left the paper for the American Heart Assocciation, I stayed on the Beer of the Week mailing list as a way to keep in touch with a kind and gentle man.

February 22, 2009

What a beautiful article that was! It breaks my heart that such a wonderful life was cut short. Sending big hugs and thoughts of love and warmth to Daryl and the rest of the family.

February 22, 2009

I had the honor and great fun of working with Bill, and he was game to do anything to get the story. On the night of the firestorm that killed 25 people and destroyed 3,000 homes. Bill and I drove around the Oakland and Berkeley hills, reporting. We tried nine times to get past firefighters and finally wound up on Route 24, which had walls of flames on both sides. He was mesmerized and worked the details into his piece. Bill was a true newsman and a great pal, looking out for those around him. My thoughts are with his family.

I have never felt so bad about someone's passing as I did at the news of Bill's. When I read he was 70 years old I was floored. I so looked forward to his columns every week and his blog was full of energy and passion that you might expect from a twenty year old. The world's loss is heavens' gain! I'm raising one in honor of Bill.

February 21, 2009

It's hard to imagine a story that captures the life of Bill Brand since he was always the one doing the writing with such a quick eye for what mattered. As a newsman, a husband father, and a friend, Bill was one of those people who always had time for everyone. He was a hard worker but he also seemed to enjoy the challenges that sent everyone else into a frenzy. Bill and his family were always there for us and our family and we remember all the good times and great kindness. Thanks Bill for all you did for all of us.

Bonnie O'Neill

February 21, 2009

Bill Brand was a sweetheart! He and his family were so generous with my children when we lived at Northgate. They even shared Ringo, Amanda's fiesty Welsh Mountain pony with my daughter, Brianna.
It wasn't until we "petsat" the equine menagerie that I truly appreciated the energy and multitasking skills of this couple.

I remember how giddy and obviously in love Daryl and Bill were. And he so clearly adored Amanda. I can't even imagine how tough this sudden loss must be for them.

I know Bill will be missed by all those he touched:(

Chris Campos

February 21, 2009

I was proud to call Bill a friend as well as a colleague. He was my first boss in California when I arrived at the Contra Costa Times in 1979. Over those decades we've worked together in a variety of newsrooms. He was a true professional, dedicated to journalism. I feel privileged to have known him. And I will miss him greatly. My sympathies to Daryl and your family.

Jim and I were extremely saddened by Bill's passing. Our condolences to Daryl and Amanda and Zach. I was looking through this guest book and I see how many lives Bill touched--east to west, north to south. Beer lovers, horse lovers, food lovers, and news lovers. How many of us have such a positive influence on so many people? Bill, we will miss you. Love, Sharon and Jim

I will remember Bill, my neighbor, a gentle man whose loving soul showed through the kindness of his words.

We crossed paths, often in the dark of the night, while making the rounds with our pets.

Bill's memory will stay in the neighborhood and with me.

Our thoughts are with Bill's family.

February 21, 2009

I am so sad to hear about this! Bill was like a father and mentor in the news room--he was a great reporter and so much fun to work with. I was always amazed at how much reporting he had done by 9:30 a.m.--it seemed like he already had put in a full day in only two hours. He was such an inspiration and I always admired his work ethic. My condolences to his family. He--and his work--will be greatly missed.

February 21, 2009

Our family met Bill when the girls were at Beth El preschoool. As their daughter Amanda and my daughter Jordan bonded immediately, we saw a lot of Bill and Daryl, living through many firsts together as the girls explored the adventures of being best friends. Bill was a warm, gentle and loving father, friend, and a devoted husband to Daryl. His smile lit up a room. Our loving condolences to Daryl, Amanda and the family. I am very sad to hear about Bill's passing. I'm still in shock. I had the privilege of working with Bill at the Tribune. We collaborated on retrospective story about the Oakland hills fire, and he drove me around pointing out every detail about what happened. He brought such energy to the newsroom. As an editor, he pushed me to rewrite and rewrite, sometimes to my exasperation, but I truly appreciate that he cared. I will miss him. Condolences to his family.

February 21, 2009

My deepest condolences to Bill's family and friends. I was privileged to have worked with Bill over the years. He was an inspiration as a journalist and a genuinely great human being. He was such a big part of the Tribune family and words can't even begin to express how much he'll be missed. I'll always remember the Belgian beer pub tour story we did together. I'll be in New Orleans this week hoisting an Abita Turbo Dog to Bill.

February 20, 2009

My heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to Bill Brand's family. I knew Bill professionally and as a friend for twenty five years. His writing always displayed his keen wit, an inquisitive mind, and his generous and jovial nature. Bill was the first - and only - regular news columnist to write about our mutual love of the art of brewing. I will miss him, but never forget him.

Robert Lopez

February 20, 2009

I worked with Bill in the Tribune Berkeley bureau in early 1992. He was a great guy, a class act and a very thoughtful, talented journalist. He was one of the reporters who typified the "can-do" attitude of the Trib in those days. We were short on resources but rich talent. And Bill was a key part of that. I'm glad I had the opportunity to work with him and get to know him.
My condolences go out to his family.

I offer my heartfelt sympathy to Bill's family...he was a warm, authentic man who made himself available and was deeply caring when we discussed his daughter's selection of the right college for her.

The Longshot, the GABF, Sam Adams Utopias, What's on Tap...everywhere I turned in the beer world, I would bump into Bill - his opinions and style of reporting opened my eyes to see things in ways I may not have considered, taught me how to turn ideas over in my mind, displayed his individualism and experience. We will miss you, Bill.

Michelle Sullivan

February 20, 2009

I had the honor of working with Bill since 2000 when I started my job at the Samuel Adams Brewery. I have the honor of working with some great journalists and some true advocates of beer. He brought the two together in a unique way. He had a zest for every new product or beer tasting as if it were his first. I will miss him at the GABF, the next time we choose a Longshot winner and most of all when we are in SF to get opinions on our new offerings. His input and prose will be sorely missed in the beer world.

Bill was an inspiration to me and a catalyst to start my own career in beer coverage. He was great, and sweet, and truly awesome. Craft beer is better having had Bill on its side, and won't be the same without him. I'm deeply sorry for this loss.

Bill was a heckuva journalist -- and a better person. He is going to be missed by a lot of people in his profession and in his community. And a lot of people in his profession and in his community are better because of his time with us. I'm sure he's at Heaven's best beer bar, with an abbey ale in hand, saving us a spot.

My good comrade Bill will be missed terribly. We became good frieds about 8 years ago talking about beer. He would call me to ask questions and share "news" about the industry. We have had many a great time talking beer and horses. I will miss his smile. My deepest sorrows to the family he was very well loved by his beer brethen.

This is very hard news to take and we extend thoughts and prayers to Bill's family. Bill was doing what he loved so that is some comfort, but the beer industry and the world has lost a dear and wonderful man. All of us here at the Brewers Association are very sad to hear this news.

What an energetic and enthusiastic journalist Bill was! It was always great to work on a story with him, because he came to every subject with a genuine curiosity that was contagious.

The last time I saw Bill, he was remarking that we needed to work together to update his portrait for the beer blog. Sorry we waited too long on that, my friend.

May you rest in peace, Bill.

February 20, 2009

Bill,

You are a dear friend. From the first interview you gave me back in 1999 to having dinner with you on that fateful night. You have always given me inspiration and happiness in the brewing world as well as just being a good friend. You will not be forgotten. My heart goes out for your family.

I am so so sorry that Bill Brand has gone to the great alehouse in the sky. His beer column was the truly greatest thing the Oakland Tribune has to offer. I met him once at the Bistro during its fresh hops festival last year (2008) and found him to be a delightful, elfen, sweet man. He did not know what to do when I complimented him highly on his work and how much I liked his column. He will be sorely sorely missed.....

Nathan Smith

February 20, 2009

Rest in Peace Bill. Thank you for being a pioneer in beer journalism and raising the status of a form of creativity which is just now starting to get the recognition it deserves. We have people like you to thank for your professional journalism and coverage of this topic for over 20 years. You are and will be very, very missed. I raise a glass in honor of your legacy. My condolences and best wishes to the family.

Wow. This sucks. My condolences to the Brand family for their loss. Having never taken the time to introduce myself to Bill is high on my list of regrets. I enjoyed his writing and will miss him.

February 20, 2009

Wow ... what a guy. Whether he was calling me, super excited about a breaking news story that had to be posted NOW or going above and beyond – like the time he bought us a six-pack of Melissa's favorite beer, which we couldn't find in the Bay. He was ever the enthusiastic journalist, dedicated staffer and thoughtful friend. I will miss, you Bill. I plan to toast you tonight with one of those remaining bottles of beer.

So very sad...Bill used to cover UC Berkeley and spent a great deal of time in our office, using the phone and filing stories. He became a member of our family here, always friendly and happy, occasionally bringing along Spencer the dog. He had the utmost integrity as a reporter and as a person. I will miss his voice on the phone so very much. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

February 20, 2009

Bill, you will be incredibly missed in our community. I think it's safe to say that without your support for craft beer, Northern California wouldn't be where it is today. Your spirit permeated through all of SF Beer Week and you will continue to be in our thoughts.

February 20, 2009

This is very sad news. I only met Bill once, when he visited our newsroom in San Jose, and I had a chance to talk with him a couple of times over the phone about his column, which I always enjoyed reading. Based on those encounters, and from reading the entries from friends here, Bill seemed liked a good person who will be missed by many. My sincere condolences to his family.

Tom Dalldorf

February 20, 2009

I first met Bill over 20 years ago when I started working with the founders of Celebrator Beer News. As a "real" journalist, Bill was an inspiration for his dedication to the beer scene and his discipline in getting the story out. To not see his always smiling face and "old school" rumpled visage again is heartbreaking. But the beer world's loss is diminished by the huge loss to his family. He will remain an inspiration to all those who champion good beer.

Bill and I worked Saturdays together at Trib. He was the go-to guy, that's for sure. He sat next to me when he came in during the week. He was one of my favorite people. I will miss him greatly.

Bill Brand was a marvelous pioneering writer for the beer community. He was a better man than writer, and he was a wonderful scribe. I last clinked glasses with him 2 short weeks ago. I will remember that moment forever. He will be genuinely missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of his many friends and family. May he forever rest in peace.

I never really had a chance to know of him until I saw the unfortunate news of his accident. I am more saddened now knowing that his continued work will be no more, thus depriving generations to come of an educated voice. God speed you on your journey "Bill", you will be missed.

Cheers
