Barbara Cheshire Obituary

CHESHIRE, Barbara "Bebe" Wright

Barbara Wright Cheshire, "Bebe", age 90, passed away on February 18, 2023. She was preceded in death by husband, Joseph Mayson Cheshire (Joe) and son Joseph Mayson Cheshire, Jr. (Joey). She is survived by daughter, Laura Cheshire and her husband, Allen Johnson; daughter-in-love, Susan Laurens Cheshire; grandson, Mayson Alexander Cheshire; granddaughter, Katharine Alana Cheshire and her husband, Steven Dunigan; great-granddaughter, Joey Louise Dunigan; and brother, Max Wright and wife, Kay.

Bebe attended Rock Spring Elementary School and North Fulton High School. She loved high school, and held many offices including Senior Class secretary (headed up reunions for 50 years), and President of Chorus. She was voted senior class Most Loyal—loyalty being the quality that defined her all her life. She met Joe Cheshire at North Fulton where he was a counselor and they became good friends. When Bebe left home for Converse College as a voice major, Joe would drive up to Spartanburg frequently to visit. On one visit, he told her he loved her. He was 26 and she was 17. "He was the love of my life and I was his."

Three weeks after Joe was activated for the Korean conflict in October 1950, they were married at Rock Spring Church and both went to California. Joe and Bebe enjoyed military life, kept home-base in Atlanta and Bebe continued college work while traveling extensively on active duty with Joe, including studying voice at University of Illinois.

After the Korean conflict, son, Joseph, Jr. (Joey) and daughter, Laura, were born. Bebe was active in children's activities including president of the PTA, Camp Fire leader, and chauffeur to all sorts of after-school practice. When the children got busy after school, Bebe returned to college and received a PhD, focusing on writing. Son Joey and Bebe earned their PhD degrees the same year. For 25 years she worked with student writing, heading the Thesis and Dissertation Assistance Unit at Georgia State University. She was author of the well-received book, "The Best Dissertation: a Finished Dissertation". She retired as Professor Emerita in 1996.

Bebe and Joe moved to Canterbury Court Retirement Center in 2008 and were active there. Joe died in 2018 of Parkinson's Disease. They held hands for 68 years. Bebe co-authored a book in 2020 with former professors at Canterbury Court about being caregivers for spouses with dementia. She was active at Canterbury Court as writer for Canterbury Tales, Garden Committee, Residents Council, soprano in Choristers, and mentor for several employee scholars.

Bebe was an active member of Rock Spring Presbyterian Church her entire life, retiring as Elder Emerita and Historian. She held a deep, lifelong love of the church and authored "The Spirit of Rock Spring", the history of the church and the community. In 2020, she wrote the Final Chapter explaining why their beloved church closed her doors in 2018. The Heritage Preparatory School finally bought the entire RS property and established a Christian school there. Bebe worked tirelessly for many years to see that happen. The miracle came when the Spring rose up and flooded the three large homes the developer built on RS land. The School was able to buy all the church property and build a comprehensive Christian school with intentions to maintain the beauty of the building and property. That put a perpetual smile on her face.

A memorial service at her beloved former church, now the sanctuary of The Heritage Preparatory School, is set for 2 PM on Saturday, March 4, 1824 Piedmont Ave. NE. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society, the Parkinson's Foundation, or Rock Spring Cemetery Association in Bebe's name. https://rockspringcemetery.org/

When I first met Bebe, I was a shy teenager, who fell in love with her brother, Billy.... she was so kind and loving to me - from the moment we met - that I have always treasured her love and friendship.
Through the years, we have shared so many very happy family times at holidays and picnics...comforted each other in times of sorrow and struggle, and I am blessed by the memories of all these times.
She has been a double blessing to my sons, with her guidance and help, through the years... the many ways that she encouraged them and gave them valuable wisdom in their progress through college.
Bebe has always been a quick, cheerful, kind friend to all of us, and I am sad to know that I cannot enjoy her presence here anymore...but my heart has peace in the knowledge that she is with Joe and Joey, and all the others who have gone before, and we all await the joyous reunion in the presence of the Lord. May God comfort us all with the remembrance of all the special things about her....

Mrs. Cheshire was a mother to me. Joey and I were best friends growing up. We were always doing things together, sometimes exploring at the limit. Mrs. Cheshire always nurtured us with guidance and love in her graceful way. She helped to raise me with her quiet understanding and integrity.

Dear Laura, Susan, Mason and Katie, you are lucky to have been loved by such a great lady. We will now talk to her through our thoughts and prayers. She will provide her love from heaven.

To Bebe's family: My father Bonneau Dickson performed your mother's wedding. Bebe Cheshire was one of the first people I met in my life whose radiance could light up a room. I so enjoyed eating lunch with her after the Homecomings at Rock Spring Presbyterian. I can't imagine how wonderful it must have been to have had her as a family member. My sincerest condolences to you all. Bebe's life was an inspiration to everyone lucky enough to meet her. I will be at the funeral Saturday to mark her entry into Heaven as one of John Calvin's Predestined Elect. If Bebe was not one, none of us have a chance. Sam Dickson

As Bonnie Fritz so beautifully wrote, Bebe was a friend and mentor as well as a colleague when we worked together in the Learning Assistance Unit of the Counseling Center at Georgia State. Last Friday, as I was in my front yard fertilizing the pansies, I found myself thinking of Bebe and remembering how every Friday she faithfully watered the house plants that she had brought to our office. In all things--large and small--Bebe was responsible and nourishing, and under her care those plants grew and thrived. When I visited her in early January, we were seated in her living room from where we could see the plants that were on her balcony, and we talked about them. Even as her own health was failing, those plants were blooming and flourishing--like everything and everyone whom Bebe loved. So now, having learned from Bebe, when I water my plants every Friday, I will think of her and be thankful for her presence in my life and in the lives of so many others.

For nearly 20 years, Bebe was mentor, friend, and inspiration for a faculty of three who shared a Learning Assistance Unit in the Georgia State University Counseling Center. For students, we were a unit of care as well as academic guidance to the many students who sought our service. The center for writing and dissertation support, Bebe's office was always busy with students, including the other two of us, all of whom she mentored in life skills as well as dissertation. Our connection has remained in retirement. Bebe's wisdom and model has shaped significant parts of my life, including her advice to respond with love to difficult people and to treasure one's spouse above all. While we shared many sad times over those years, Bebe was always ready for a good laugh in our many meetings and lunches. She remains a treasured presence in my life. My deep condolences to her family for the loss of this amazing lady.

Dear Laura,
Becky and I are so sad to learn of your mom's passing. May you find comfort knowing hers was a life well lived as she had an impact on so many through her writing, teaching, and work with the Rock Spring Presbyterian Church.
