Roger Lang Obituary

LANG--Roger, The Board and Staff of The New York Landmarks Conservancy mourn the death of Roger Lang, our Director of Community Programs and Services for the past 16 years. Roger's knowledge of architecture, passion for preservation, and eloquent writing and speech, earned him wide respect. He was the Conservancy's voice at the Landmarks Commission, before the City Council, and in numerous meetings with sister organizations. Roger was instrumental in the Landmarks Conservancy's efforts to stabilize and save the South Side of Ellis Island. He was a trusted advisor to Save Ellis Island, Inc., St. Bartholomew's Church, the Jay Heritage Center in Rye, and other institutions. He also organized the Conservancy's annual Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards and relished honoring preservation accomplishments. A popular Adjunct Professor at the University of Vermont and Boston University and Visiting Lecturer at Columbia University, Harvard Graduate School of Design, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Pratt Institute, Roger instilled countless students with a dedication to the profession he loved. Roger's love of preservation was matched by his love of people. His wit and joy at living made him more than a colleague. He was a thoughtful and engaging friend. Roger's legacy is found in the architectural treasures he defended, protected and preserved and the numerous lives he touched. The family is planning a public memorial to be announced at a later date. Frank J. Sciame, Jr., Chair Peg Breen, President.

Mr. Lang,
Sir, I would just like to say th ank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

I don't recall how I first met Roger; he was the kind of person who you felt you always knew. His warm presence and enthusiasm were such a great gift at any event or occasion. We worked together over the years on several projects, notably the symposium "Preserving Historic Guastavino Tile Ceilings, Domes, and Vaults" in February 1999 at Columbia University. Roger was instrumental in directing the papers of Simon Breines to the Drawings and Archives at Avery Library at Columbia. I hope his family will be comforted by thoughts of all Roger accomplished and the people that he touched.

"...as this fell sergeant, death,
Is strict in his arrest..."

It was my good fortune to call Roger a friend. I have no doubt that there are many besides myself for whom his wit and intelligent conversation will find no replacement. That we were all denied the opportunity to speak with him one last time was especially painful.

His influence was widespread and will carry on.

He was blessed in the last six years, after a coronary event that could have claimed his life, to have a wonderful partner with whom he went to London, Paris, Hawaii, Maine, and the Jersey Shore, as well as two caring sons, to all of whom I send my thoughts and prayers.
