I don't recall how I first met Roger; he was the kind of person who you felt you always knew. His warm presence and enthusiasm were such a great gift at any event or occasion. We worked together over the years on several projects, notably the symposium "Preserving Historic Guastavino Tile Ceilings, Domes, and Vaults" in February 1999 at Columbia University. Roger was instrumental in directing the papers of Simon Breines to the Drawings and Archives at Avery Library at Columbia. I hope his family will be comforted by thoughts of all Roger accomplished and the people that he touched.

"...as this fell sergeant, death,
Is strict in his arrest..."
It was my good fortune to call Roger a friend. I have no doubt that there are many besides myself for whom his wit and intelligent conversation will find no replacement. That we were all denied the opportunity to speak with him one last time was especially painful.
His influence was widespread and will carry on.
He was blessed in the last six years, after a coronary event that could have claimed his life, to have a wonderful partner with whom he went to London, Paris, Hawaii, Maine, and the Jersey Shore, as well as two caring sons, to all of whom I send my thoughts and prayers.
