ERNEST WASSERMAN Obituary

Ernest Wasserman, 92, beloved father, grandfather, and brother of Albany, died on December 9, 2009 in Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home. He was born and raised in Schenectady. Mr. Wasserman lived in the same house in the Mont Pleasant section of Schenectady for over 50 years, first as the son of Tillie and Joe Wasserman, and then while he raised his own family with his loving wife, the former Jeannette Bloch of Lynn, Massachusetts. While serving in the Army, Mr. Wasserman was stationed in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. He fought the remainder of the war in the European Theater. After the war, he returned to Schenectady and worked for over 25 years at Capitol Paint & Hardware in Schenectady. He was a longtime member of Temple Gates of Heaven and a member of its Brotherhood. He was also a member of the Albany Chapter of the Knights of Pythias. Mr. Wasserman was a voracious reader who instilled the joys of reading in his children and grandchildren. He was a committed father and grandfather who enjoyed nothing more than being with his loving family. He is survived by two children, Sara Richman of Lynn- field, Massachusetts and Lee Wasserman of Riverdale, New York; and five grandchildren; and by his sister, Lois Bluestein of Schenectady; and brother, Robert of Ithaca, New York. He is also survived by his beloved Thelma Gerwitzman. A memorial service will be held at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union Street in Schenectady on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 11 a.m. Donations in his memory can be made to the Capital Region Jewish Federation for Literacy, 184 Washington Avenue Ext., Albany, New York 12203-5347, attention Shelly Shapiro. Mr. Wasserman,
Sir, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country when you served during WW II-especially at Pearl Harbor and for being a member of the Greatest Generation. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
