Arthur Loesch Obituary

Loesch, Arthur Z. Ph.D. GUILDERLAND Dr. Arthur Z. Loesch passed away on April 5, 2012 surrounded by family at his home, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Loesch was born in Lvov, Poland on June 29, 1942. He was the son of the late Irene (Kaczmar) Zlobnicki and Casimir Loesch. Dr. Loesch lost his father at an early age, and was raised by his late stepfather, Bruno Zlobnicki. He received a B.S. in honors physics in 1965 from the University of Montreal, and a Ph.D. in geophysical fluid dynamics from the University of Chicago in 1973. He did his post-doctorate work at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colo. In 1973 he accepted a faculty position at SUNY Albany in the atmospheric science department, where he worked until his retirement in 2007. He was an internationally recognized expert in the field of geophysical fluid dynamics and was the author of numerous articles published in The Journal of Atmospheric Science, Tellus, and the European Journal of Mechanics. While on sabbatical from SUNYA, he had the opportunity to teach at Florida State University, Tallahassee, Fla. in 1979 and at the University of Stockholm, Sweden in 1997. Dr. Loesch was a natural born educator and became a mentor and great friend to many students throughout the years. He was an ardent audio enthusiast and was a member of the Catskill and Adirondack Audio Society in Albany. He was a primary source and consultant for Western Electric Sound, a two volume book published by Japan's Stereo Sound magazine. In 1999, he partnered with Joe Levy and founded Tempo Electric. The company produces amplifier and preamplifier designs for life-like, in-home musical reproduction. His designs, considered a perfect blend of science and art, have been published in various magazines such as Stereophile, Bound-for-Sound and Sound Practices. Dr. Loesch had many passions, especially entertaining family and friends with his Polish culture and cuisine, good music, fine wine and stimulating conversation. He enjoyed foreign movies, hiking, biking, skiing and photography. He traveled extensively with his family and took great pleasure in learning about different cultures. He was fluent in several languages but had a special fondness for the French language and culture. His joie de vivre made everything he did an adventure, his last one being a wonderful month in Cannes, France in October 2011. He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Carolyn (Rovelli) Loesch; daughter, Lisa Cotter of Pebble Beach, Calif.; son, Frederic Loesch of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Jessica (David) Duncan of Cape Coral. Fla.; sons, Eric and Gregory Loesch of Guilderland, N.Y.; grandchildren, Kyle and Bridget Duncan; sisters, Grace (Semih) Kalay and Lidia Zlobnicki, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister-in-law, Sandra (Leroy) Hirsch of Albany, N.Y.; Godsons, Keven Kalay of Chicago, Ill. and Andrew Annunziata of New Haven, Conn.; and special friends Alan and Jane Domaracki. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. The family would like to thank the dedicated and caring staff at Dana Farber Cancer Center in Boston, Mass. Also, heartfelt thanks to The Community Hospice of Albany staff for their compassion and support. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at New Comer-Cannon Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). Calling hours will precede the service from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in Colorado Springs, Colo. To Carolyn and family...I am sad to hear of Arthur's passing. He was a brilliant man, a great spirit and a true friend to so many of us audio hobbyists...he shared his hobby in the best possible way by teaching us how and why our electronics work...he taught me many other life lessons I will carry with me for the rest of my life. You have my deepest condolences..

Dear Carolyn and Family,
Ramam and I are so sorry to hear of Arthur's passing. We remember our times together in his apartment where he provided reel to reel music at parties for none stop dancing. Today we still have the stereo speakers that he recommended with the state of the art woofers and tweeters. We will always remember him in our prayers.

I met Arthur through a mutual friend, Jim Allen, in the late 90's... Arthur introduced me to the wonderful world of tube audio and Tannoy speakers. Arthur was always a hospitable host & gracious gentleman and I reminisce the times talking about audio, wine and kielbasa! May God bless him!

Carolyn, we have such fond memories of our times at the apartments on Tryon Court. We think about them often and how life was so simple then. What a family we were. We had so many great laughs and so fondly remember Arthur, as Dr.HiFi he loved his music, and supplied it for our parties. Jim and I are so saddened by the news of Arthurs passing. He was a wonderful person, very genuine, and always very thoughtful. We will keep you in our prayers. Deeply sorry for your tragic loss. He was taken way too soon. Paula and Jim Begley , Guilderland

Dear Carolyn, Lisa, Frederic, and the rest that I unfortunately did not meet:
I am so sorry for your great loss and it was such a shock for me to hear of his death. Arthur and I go back Many years ago and shared great moments and memories with him, Lisa, and Frederic, when they were very young. We listened to great music with him and we even called him affectionately Dr. Hi-FI. Carolyn, I am sure you remember me and I share with you your great loss. May God bless his soul and let his memories stay with us as long as we live.

The attached photo shows Arthur and a few of us relaxing after hours enjoying some nice wine at an audio show in Las Vegas in January 2010. Arthur is second from the left in the black jacket, and I am on the right end.
