1936 - 2013
Peter Franck was born in Pasadena California to Anita Chadbourne and Thomas George Franck in 1936. Peter had two twin sisters, with whom he was very close, Mary and Susan. Peter grew up in the Bay Area and was sent to St. Paul's Boarding school at the age of 12. He then went on to study Anthropology at Harvard University followed by a medical degree from Harvard Medical School specializing in infectious disease. During his time in Boston he worked at Mass General where he met his wife of 51 years, Fay, who was working as a zoologist at the time. Peter and Fay lived in Panama for 4 years while Peter worked for the Middle America Research Unit and the National Institute of Health studying tropical medicine and working with the Kuna Indians. They moved to Redding CA in 1974, where Peter was an infectious disease physician at Mercy Medical Center and in private practice.
Peter was an avid outdoorsman. He was an experienced sailor. He sailed in Greece, Panama, across the North Sea, and along the East Coast of the US. Peter also loved powder and helicopter skiing in Canada and Utah. He spent several summers since the age of 16 white water canoeing in the Northwest Territories of Canada. One trip appeared in the television series Bold Journeys in the 50's. He loved backpacking in the Trinities and Cascades of Northern California.
Peter developed Parkinson's disease with dementia, although he continued to keep his dry sense of humor and diagnostic skills to the end of his life. He passed away June 28th from pneumonia with his family at his bedside.
Peter is survived by his wife Fay of Redding, sister Mary of San Francisco, daughters Cindy, Elizabeth, Valerie, grandson Martin Volz and caregiver Karen Duckett. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Michael J Fox foundation for Parkinson's Research.

Although I never canoed with this incredible man, I did have the pleasure of working with him @ Mercy Medical Center. His depth & intelligence were enormous. His love of native art at one time did get me interested in Molas.
Thank you for all the good works in your lifetime. My prayers to your family S. Copley

I, too, canoed with Peter in Canada's great northern wildness and am so sorry to have just learned of his passing. I will always fondly recall his subtle wit shared around a precious Arctic nip, kindly followed up months later with the surprise delivery of the finest cognac I've ever tasted. Peter's intelligence ever coupled with his thoughtfulness and heart are what I miss. Thanks for the memories, Peter!

I just learned of Peter's death from Jim Abel as the word spreads among those who canoed with Peter on Northwest Territories trips. I remember that Peter tolerated the rapids, but he thrived on being in the midst of vast, beautiful, "barren" landscapes. And he could say much with a few pithy words! I think of him with great fondness and still smile at some of his funny statements--still vividly recalled after 25 years!

I knew Peter on two summer-long canoe trips in the Northwest Territories of Canada, including one when we were boat partners. Peter had a quiet intensity and toughness about him. He loved walking the tundra in the evening, pipe in mouth, eyes scanning the wide horizon for wildlife. This is sad news. I send my condolences.

Fay, we will never forget when you and Peter and Bert and Hank Woodrum went out for dinner together not long after you moved here. The last time I talked to Peter was on the phone in ca. 1991 when Anne suffered a bite on her heel by a wild squirrel at the Redding Municipal Airport. We were worried about contracting rabies and he advised us to get the shots right away. We will never forget his kindnesses. Bill Nicol, MD (Ret.) and Anne

When I think of Dr. Franck, I always smile! He brings back wonderfully cheerful memories. I remember seeing him in the parking lot leaving his car (1980's maybe??). There was hand painted a collage of, well, I'm not sure, of artwork! His smile was the best and said his daughter(s) did that! He was so proud of it! What was important to him was his patients and his friendships at the hospital. I will always love this man for his skill as a physician, for his dry sense of humor (which I SO enjoyed) and his caring. I will miss him. My heartfelt sympathy to his family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Franck was a wonderful physician. I was infection control nurse at Mercy and had many questions. I learned so much from him. He was so proud of all of his family.

He was a brilliant physician, and an inspiration to his colleagues. His sense of humor was disarming, and he was able to turn a wry phrase at almost any time and place. He also inspires us all to live life to the fullest.
