Thomas Bailey Obituary

November 28, 1934 - April 27, 2017
Thomas E Bailey died on April 27, 2017 at the age of 82; Tom was a lifelong resident of San Antonio, TX.

Tom was born on November 28, 1934 in San Antonio to his parents, John W Bailey Sr. and Louise B Bailey. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1952, and attended St Mary's University until entering into the Army in 1955 where he became a proud member of the rifle team. Tom went on to earn a degree in Fire Science, and in 1962, he joined the San Antonio Fire Department where he retired as a Captain after 32 years of service. During this time, Tom continued his newspaper route for the Express News for 32 years, and was a beloved yardman working alongside his adored wife for 38 years up until the time of his death. Tom was an avid collector of many things but his most valued treasures were his family and countless friends he met during his life. Tom truly never met a stranger and will be missed by all who knew him. Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years Hannelore Bailey, Son Thomas J Bailey and wife Deleene of Bandera, TX, Daughter, Heidi M Land-Webb of San Antonio, TX and Grandchildren, Ronald, Travis, and Patrick Land, Justin Webb, Austin Bailey, Erika Bailey, and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Catherine Koehler and older brothers John W and Joe R Bailey.

I miss Tom so much!
He served in the Fire Dept with my uncle, George Granata.
He was a dear neighbor who always had a kind word and a smile.
I would walk with my special needs son while pushing him in a wheel chair around our neighborhood.
Going up a hill, huffing and puffing... out of the blue I'd hear, "You're working too hard, Gina!"
Always made me laugh. Now, my son has been gone 7 years and Tom is also with the Lord...
North Hampton Dr. and Colonies North is missing a great friend and neighbor!

Captain Bailey was the reason I became a firefighter. He always had a smile and a great encouraging story for me as a young man. I always wanted to follow in his footsteps. He will be missed by many but his legacy will live on through the many firefighters that he fostered through the years.

40+ years ago, I met Tom & his sweet, wonderful wife Hanna. They were partners trimming trees ( a side job together)down the street and they became "friends & family" for us. He was my "go to guy" for landscaping repairs & corrections. Tom loved Mother Nature & helped keep her world clean & beautiful & certainly no stranger to the ladder> being a fireman. On 26th Tom came by our house b/c he wanted the spent blossoms/seeds from the bluebonnets to sprinkle on his property in Bandera, TX. I did hug him goodbye (always hug friends) Bluebonnets will be called "Tom" in the Spring in remembrance of a wonderful man. Tom was such a happy, witty, funny, honest, hard working guy. It was always a pleasure to see him. We appreciated him so & will miss him. His procession to the cemetery was a great Tribute by the San Antonio Fire Dept with Tom Bailey riding on a vintage fire truck for his last trip with them & ringing/tolling the silver Bell was a unique but emotionally beautiful touch Our condolences to his wonderful family. Mr. Bailey will be dearly missed by everyone here at Frost Bank at Colonnade. He was a frequent customer of ours and when we received the news of his passing we were all sadden. He was one of the few customers we have that always came into the branch with such a happy, positive and humorous attitude. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.
