Tom Staley, known to me as Manly Staley, was my roommate during our Junior Year Abroad in Paris (1964-1965), where we boarded with Mme Irène Hannebicque on the Rue du Faubourg Poissonière. He was an intrepid traveler. During the Christmas break (1964), impelled by a bout of home sickness, he hitchhiked from Paris to Prestwick (Scotland) where he boarded a plane to Gander in Newfoundland (Canada) and proceeded to hitchhike home to the US. And did the reverse trip at the end of his holiday. Épatant! I am very saddened to learn of his passing, and take immense joy in memories of shared experiences almost 60 years ago. RIP, roomie.

C´est avec tristesse que je viens d´apprendre que Tom était décédé. Il était si cultivé, si aimable et doté de cette personnalité que vous ne pouvez l´oublier. Je garde de lui un souvenir agréable.

I had the great privilege of meeting Tom through a mutual friend at the March on Washington in 1993. He had a magnetic personality and we became almost immediate friends. I enjoyed visiting him at his beautiful house in SFO, taking occasional day trips, seeing museum exhibits, or sometimes just hitting a coffeeshop or restaurant on Castro and Market. In the past few years he always sent me postcards from France or other places he traveled. The last time I visited him was January 2016 and he seemed more frail. However, the way he still effortlessly seemed to always tackle the steep hill to his house on Castro or in the past walk for miles in NYC was a sign of his approach towards reaching his goals and overcoming obstacles in life.

Some knew him by Tom, we knew him as Manly. He was my cousin and my wife Kris and I stopped by to see Manly when ever we were traveling through California. It was always good to see him. At our last visit (August 10, 2017)we noticed he was not doing well.He knew it also. Manly was fun to talk to and always had a story or two to tell us.We will miss him but do realize he is in a better place now.
