Daniel POFFENBERGER Obituary

POFFENBERGER, Daniel Jay

In the early morning hours on Friday, December 18, Daniel Jay Poffenberger was recommended to the spirit in the sky and went to the place that is the best. He burst onto the scene on July 11, 1949, in Dayton, Ohio, to his proud parents, Wade and Hazel. He adored his sisters, Carol and Ruth Ann and his dozens of cousins. In his youth, he immersed himself in Little league, Scouts, St. Jacob's, Miamisburg "Burg" football, paperboy, played the Saxophone in the band and HS musicals. After graduating from MHS he was lifeguarding at the pool when Karyn caught his eye. Meeting Karyn made him an

official member of the McGuire 13. He was a proud Ohio

University Bobcat and studied Speech Pathology. His time at OU started his passion for tree hugging and politics. In 1970, Dan and Karyn married and welcomed their son Andrew later that year. In 1973, Heidi Jo joined the family. He worked at Frigidaire and GM Truck and Bus. He was passionate about his local 801, was a Union Rep, and the Shop Chairman. "Slow down, you move too fast!" He helped in Cub and Boy Scouts, coached soccer, t-ball and little league baseball. He loved hunting, camping, fishing, canoeing, boating, family

vacations, road trips and gardening. He proudly became Pa to Derek, Casey, Ben and Aaron Poffenberger, Lauren and

Whitney Hill and great-granddaughter, Brystol Poffenberger. Dan lived life fast and hard. After retiring, he spent time golfing, cooking, churching, volunteering, birding, was a FB

fanatic, relaxing and going to the YMCA. He cherished time with his favorite son in law, Tony Hill hunting and watching sporting events on Sundays. In spite of many health challenges, he "kept on trucking." He was a friend of Bill W., a proud Liberal, an avid reader, a Trekkie, Krogered every day, a lifelong member of the NRA, looked forward to hitting balls with his golf buddies, was patriotic, participated in musical jam

sessions, loved dogs and wildlife, Friday nights at P3, writing poetry, bled Scarlet and Gray, and Friday night lights at Harmon Field. He was a forever MHS Viking and has bear crawled his way to "Valhalla." He ended up at Wright State School of Medicine to finish his degree. "Be happy, joyous and free, live long and prosper and excellent to each other. The Dude does indeed abide." Services pending and a celebration of life will occur once we are all declared safe from the scourge.

Karyn and Family, what a wonderful tribute to Dan. I want to extend condolences from the entire Fink family. I was deeply saddened when I heard of Dan’s passing. He was a truly larger than life individual and beneath the usually gruff exterior was a heart of gold. I recalled our days as kids growing up on Early Drive. But then life happened, and we grew apart living our lives, but reconnected several years ago at the West Carrollton “Y”. We would reminisce about our days in the old neighborhood, when he was not holding court on some other subject of great concern to him. But everyone loved him. Each week during the summer I looked forward to our Tuesday, Thursday golf matches with the rest of the old duffers. Next summer just won’t be the same without him. Dan will certainly be missed, but it seems that all our lives are better for having known him. I am proud to call him a friend.

My best time with him was the day he, Bill Schmidt, and I went mushroom hunting at Germantown dam and Bill's brothers place. We didn't find even 1 but the conversations were great!!

But,with playing softball with Double D and your brothers, fishing in the Mad river with your brothers, hunting with your brothers, Jamming on stage with your brothers, bagels and limburger cheese with Irish coffee on Sunday mornings with your brothers! Yes! You were a very large part of our lives! We love you and you will be missed! But,never forgotten! Your brother,Tim

My condolences, to sister Karyn,Andy and Heidi! Dan was my brother, friend and church buddy! Are Sunday mornings started out sitting in his car radio turned up,we were movin and groovin. We both had a little rhythm and couldn't sing a lick. But that didn't matter to us,it was about feeling good! After that we made are way into the church, we both agreed, going to praise the lord, and feeling good about it! There's no doubt he(Dan is fitting right in with all his loved ones, and many others. Miss you brother Poff. I'll keep ur place warm in the sanctuary.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Karyn, Andrew, Heidi and their immediate and extended families. I can’t say I wasn’t devastated upon learning of Dan’s passing. Dan was an incredibly bright light in all our lives and will be missed terribly. He had a great love for his entire family, friends and community. He was fiercely loyal and very protective. I met Dan 6 years ago and became friends. He has taught us all more than we could have ever imagined. Ronda, Kayden and I will forever miss your wisdom, insight and most of all your “Danisms”.
Rest In Peace my friend...Rest in Peace.

I'd just like to say that I got a chance to meet D. Poffenberger back in 2000 I believe. My father Thomas H. Carter Jr was president of IUE local 798 and Poffenberger was his shop chairman. We all went to Sarasota, Florida for negotiations. We all went out to eat together almost every night and hung out at the hotel almost daily. I've never laughed so hard in my life at the stories and jokes Poffenberger would tell! He was definitely a memorable guy that I will never forget! I'm truly sorry for your guys loss and my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Prayers

Dan was larger than life in so many ways and years beyond intelligence. I first met Dan when I was a small girl about 5 on Early Dr and at the Nunery family reunions. He always took time to make you feel special and his sense of humor was spot on. We worked together at Frigadaire and Truck and Bus for 30 years. I hung out in his office or at the Union hall so many times during lunch or OT. We saw each other at the Y or chatted those early mornings before he left to be first one there in warm therapy pool. Dan spoke the truth when others didn’t dare go there. He had passion for so many sports and his hometown. His greatest achievement was his Wife, children and grandchildren. He will be so missed but never forgotten. When you say Poff A smile comes to your face. He touched lives and was a great fighter for so many causes. You always made you feel like You mattered. RIP dear friend. I loved you and will never forget you. Prayers to Karyn, Andrew and Heidi and families and his grandchildren, relatives and so many friends at GM and MHS.
