Walter Lowe Obituary
Of Newtown Square, PA, passed on February 23, 2024.
Beloved spouse (Barbara DeConcini), cherished friend, brilliant teacher, supportive colleague.
Before retiring, Dr. Lowe served for thirty-five years as Professor of Systematic Theology at Emory University, in both the Candler School of Theology and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. As one of his graduate students writes, "Walt Lowe thought deeply and taught with electricity." His published works include numerous essays and several books, most notably, "Theology & Difference: The Wound of Reason".
A celebration of his life will be held in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, GA 30322.

Walter Lowe was the brightest and most intellectually stimulating professors I had the privilege to work with at Emory University. Beyond his erudition and encyclopedic mastery of the Western theological tradition, Walter Lowe was also an excellent teacher who challenged his students to think critically and to think dialectically. He had a gift for making the ideas and concepts of challenging thinkers like Ricoeur, Derrida, and Adorno understandable without over simplifying or dumbing them down. He made a huge difference in my life.

Walt or " The Grinder" as he was known at Yale Divinity School was a great friend to have . We were both residents of Taylor House on the Yale campus in the mid 60´s . Walt was a dedicated student whose goal was to become a professor of theology. He obtained that goal with his illustrious career at Emory and Candler. It was great to see him at our 25th .. when we drive together down from Boston... and at our 50th reunion in 2017.

Although I only met Professor Lowe a few times, he was a major intellectual influence on me. He brought psychology and later deconstruction into a theological compass in a distinctively Anglican/Episcopalian way. His appreciation of how the writing of Derrida could,for all its irreverent appearance, have a constructive and spiritually positive effect on Christian thinking was salutary. My condolences to Barbara, his family, and loved ones.

My condolences to Barbara, Walt´s spouse, as she goes through the days since Walt passed. Barbara remembers Walt in a way no one else can, and will remember him in special ways. May she be blessed with the peace Walt now enjoys.

No teacher I've had was more intimidating or provocative than Dr. Lowe. His presence and challenge stuck with me long after I left Emory and started my own teaching career. It was a privilege to have him as a formative influence.
