Elizabeth Spelman Obituary

Elizabeth Victoria Spelman

Northampton, MA - Elizabeth Victoria Spelman

Born April 3, 1945 – Died December 26, 2025

Vicky Spelman passed away peacefully in her home in Northampton, Massachusetts, after a brief illness.

Elizabeth V. Spelman was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Elizabeth Schneider Spelman and Norman Leslie Spelman (both deceased). She is survived by two sisters, Deborah Campert and Cornelia Maude Spelman; her brother Jonathan White Spelman and sister-in-law Liz Lerman. A second brother, Michael Francis Spelman, pre-deceased her. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including "the divine" Anna Spelman, as well as a beloved goddaughter, Mira Minow Singer.

Vicky received her B.A. from Wellesley College in 1966 and her Ph.D. from The John Hopkins University in 1974. After teaching at both Amherst and Carleton College, she joined the philosophy department at Smith College and taught generations of students from 1982 until her retirement in 2024. She was a lifelong educator, eminent feminist scholar and professor of Philosophy, appointed to the prestigious Barbara Richmond 1940 Chair in the Humanities in 2000. Her first book, Inessential Woman: Problems of Exclusion in Feminist Thought (1988), was named an outstanding book by the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights in the United States. In subsequent, widely-read books she turned her philosophical attention to topics as varied as what it means to regard human beings as objects – rather than subjects -- of suffering; to the notion of repair and to the variety of repair activities that humans undertake, from fixing cars to fixing friendships; and, in her 2016 book, Trash Talks: Revelations in the Rubbish, to an analysis of what it means to be a maker of waste and to relegate objects and peoples to the category of "trash." There was no topic too small or too mundane to evade this remarkable philosopher's scrutiny, written in accessible language and peppered with humorous and relatable anecdotes.

All who knew Vicky – family, friends, colleagues, and students -- admired her astonishingly quick and irreverent wit. She was active in all aspects of campus life, and had a deep love of sports, playing on a local all-women's softball team called The Hot Flashes. She was also a basketball phenom. Family legend has her shooting hoops, dressed for Anna's Bat Mitzvah and having a blast. Fittingly, Vicky was working on a book about mirth at the time of her death.

This bright and glittering light is now extinguished; she will be sorely missed.

Donations in Vicky's name may be made to the Scholarship Fund at Smith College. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Wow! What a life. So many of the traits mentioned were already there at Walnut Hills...especially the quick, irreverent wit! Sending deep sympathy for your loss.

Dear Jon and Liz:
I was greatly saddened to learn of Vicky´s death. She was one of a small group of friends who sustained and enriched my life at Wellesley. She was always the funny one, with a wit that overlaid and even sometimes disguised deep thinking. Vicky herself intervened in a courageous way during that time to enable my continued dedication to philosophy, an intervention that I´m now sure made a huge difference to the way my life turned out. I´m not surprised that she turned out to be a fantastic teacher, and contributed in such unusual and meaningful ways to philosophical writing. She was a light to everyone around her, and I can only imagine how devasted you and her current friends must be at her loss.
You and I met at Bellagio many years ago, where Liz and my (now deceased) husband Alvin Goldman were fellows. I still remember Liz´s wonderful account of the mini-front loaders dance she choreographed!

Vicky's generosity was unparalleled. She was a mentor and member of SOFPHIA and a fabulous host and travel companion. I fondly remember our time together in Vienna where she had a prestigious fellowship. While I write on human play, Vicky exuded the ludic spirit, with humor and poise. Vicky Presente!

Vicky Spelman was so very kind and supportive of me throughout my career at Smith College. I will always remember her with fondness and deep respect for the intellectual brilliance she gifted to the world.

Vicky and I shared the same floor in a small building where we had our offices in our early days at Smith College. She liked to say, with a grin, "We shared a bathroom." Later, we were in an informal discussion group together and I remember some of her interesting, often unorthodox contributions. She recommended a book to me long ago that helped my thinking (not her book!). Above all, it is her smile that I remember.

Hello Jon,
It was my pleasure to have known Vicky since WHHS, so a lot longer than her colleagues at Smith. She always retained her sense of humor and her wry smile at the follies of fellow humans (self included). I know she was a beloved member of the Smith faculty and of her devoted students. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time..

It is hard to overstate the joy that Vicky brought to her students with her incredible sense of humor, unbounded curiosity, and clear love of teaching. I took my first philosophy class with Vicky, a course on the philosophy of design, and it not only changed the trajectory of my education (I majored in philosophy!) but changed the way I think about the value of education. Vicky showed me that philosophical inquiry has the power to elevate the mundane, give voice to the voiceless, and make the world a more just and beautiful place, one of the greatest gifts I can imagine. Sending love and peace to Vicky's family and to all those who were lucky enough to know her. May her memory be a radical and joyful blessing.

Dear family of Dr Spelman. Am so sorry to hear this news, and extend my condolences to you.
I took a class with Vicky while at Smith ( class of `89). She had quickly become a legend, and it was a privilege to get into her class! She is amongst the most memorable of my Smith instructors. It is a gift to have these memories become so vivid, she will not be forgotten.
