Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Fred L. Maciel US Marine Lance Corporal. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,

To all who write here I am Freds brother and I appreciate all that yall have writen and expressed. I miss my brother very much as do his nephews and neice. With the passing of the anniversary we did the usual and took flowers to his grave, you would think that after 5 years it wouldnt be as hard to see him but that is not true. It hits as hard as the first time I heard he is gone and will never come back even though I know I will see him again I wish I could see him, I wish he could see my children. My youngest son was to little to even remember him, my daughter has forgotten him except for the stories we remind her about, as for my oldest son he remembers him very well and is very emotional about missing him. All I can tell him is that Fred is still here we just cant see him and one day we will all be together again. I miss you bro so much.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Fred, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

In a little more than a week it will be 4 years. I look back on it and it seems like both ages ago and yesterday.
I know, like you, I do not go a day without thinking not only of my son but of all those that died that day.
I also think about those that did not that day and the feelings that they may have for surviving and going on with their lives.
I’m sorry that I have never written before. I guess it was not my time to do so.
Out of all that died that day I only knew Mike, but they were all brothers and because of that, they were all, my son’s.
The tears that I shed for him I shed for all.

My name is Jose... I am from Spring, TX and am currently in 1/3 Alpha Company in Hawaii. I am the next generation of Marines that followed his. I was raised by his generation; the "Fallujah Veterans", the ones that started this legacy that I now continue to believe in. I am now a two time combat vet in my last year and there is not a day that goes by that I don't teach the new Marines about my seniors... about Fred and all his friends. Because of your generation Fred, we became the first unit to bring everybody home from combat. Although I never knew you, you will always be my senior and I will always be your "boot". "Fallujah Veterans", the true back-bone of 1/3.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I want you to know that I still have you and your family in my mind and heart. Although I never got to see that big smile and that funny Fred everyone is writing about, Fred actually change my life. I was honored to bring a hero like Fred home to you and your loving family and friends. At the end of the day, that is all a Marines ask. Please take me home. I wanted to make sure that he got home with the full honors he surley deserved. You and your family have a permanent place in my heart.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Psalm 23
1
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3
He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!
My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

Dear Ms. Patsy Maciel, Mr. Fred Copenhaver, Jamie Hommel, and Carlos,
May I offer my condolences to you all and your family upon the passing of your American hero son, brother, and loved one, Fred, in Iraq in late January.
Please know that other Americans share in your loss and are concerned. It is my prayer that God may continue to grant you all an extra measure of peace, comfort, and strength during this difficult time.
May Fred's legacy of bravery and his devotion to our country and its safety be a source of pride to your family, an inspiration to his peers, and forever remembered by a grateful nation!
His sacrifice is not unlike those Texans in times past who gave their all for freedom's sake in places with such names as San Jacinto, Sharpsburg, Ardennes Forest, Iwo Jima, Inchon, and Khe Sahn.
He truly was "Siemper Fi"!
Sincerely, with deepest sympathy,
Diana Nelson

I can't even try to imagine life without your smiling face, and crazy jokes. And the many times I used to pick on you about your ugly shoes.(tee-hee) Not a day goes by that we don't think about you. I have even written a poem for you that was submitted into this contest last month."Remember Me Always" It was kinda funny how that had happened. I was in the shower and the words and emotion just flowed through me. I don't care if it wins I just wanted everyone to hear it. Your Mom and Me still stay on the phone for hours at a time, but things have changed so much. She still thinks of you so much and hurts gravely. Some days are better than others but it's just never going to be the same without you. Lee will sometimes talk about the way you guys were always together, Football, Basketball or whatever ya'll felt like that day. I can still hear the crack in his voice from time to time, you know Lee better than anyone. He's been playing Basketball almost everyday when he is off work. Been working alot lately, even some overtime. I know you are there with him. As you are for everyone. You have meant so much to the people in your life and always will be. We will never forget you. LOVE YOU ALWAYS.

"Well, it's hard to believe that it has been over two months since you left us! I still cry for you and I think "You would be home with us by now." We would be planning a glorious wedding for you and Jamie. I miss you so much! You would be very proud of Jamie...she is trying to pickup the pieces of her life and move forward. She is enrolling for Fall classes at Sam Houston State University. She is reluctant to move forward without you by her side, but she says that she is never really alone...you are always there with her. She has had to overcome many things since your passing that would beat-down the everyday person. But she has held her head high and never let anyone upset her or change what she knows to be true. She had your heart and no one will ever be able to change that! Jamie and I came to visit your resting place and we brought you a spray of spring flowers! I'm sure that they are nothing compared to heaven's flowers, but I hope you like them. I hope that you know how much you meant to us and how much you are truly loved! Help me to continue to guide Jamie. I know that she will make us both proud! I miss you son!

I knew Fred very well. He was my next door neighbor, and one of my best friends and pretty much my "first real love". I remember the first day that he moved down here with his mom. What a cutie!! Though he didn't talk to me at first, we finally became friends. We were together constantly. Everyday in the summer we would play basketball and sit around talking. I remember it like it was yesterday. I will never forget the long days of chasing around the yard with cups of water. It's really hard to admit but I loved Fred. We were never together, even though it seemed like it. Around the time of Fred's senior year, we went our own ways and didn't talk at all. Even when Fred came home from bootcamp, we didn't talk. I thought about him from time to time, but never admitted it. When I found out what happened I was so shocked and very upset. Fred, you will be truely missed!! (by me and many others) I am so proud of you for being the BEST, being a MARINE!!!! To the family, Patsy, I am so sorry. Our prayers are with you through this hard time. I am here if you need anything! Jamie, I didn't know you that well, but we did go to school together. I did work at Splashtown with you for a summer. I am sorry for your lose.Me and My boyfriend (A United States Marine) give our deepest sympathy to all who loved , and knew Fred. Fred, I miss you and love you! You will always be in my heart!!

I would like to express my sorrow for the loss of Fred. I know the pain and grief that you are feeling first hand as my brother Sgt Michael W Finke jr was on the helicopter with Fred. I would like you to know that they were family and that mean I feel like we are family even though we have not ever met. I pray for your family during this time of great loss. I hope that you will contact me, but if not I understand and God Bless.

I am so glad that my family got to meet Fred. He is one in a million!! He always made people laugh. He was very kind and he would help anyone who needed it. He would come over and help Fred with anything that needed done. You didn't even have to ask him because he would always ask you what needed done. No job was too big or too small. He always had a smile on his face. (especially when he was chasing Amanda around the yard with a glass or bucket of water to get her back when she had gotten him the day before. The little ones loved him. I keep expecting to see his face looking through our front door glass. It's still a shock. He will be missed greatly, but never forgotten. Thanks for protecting us!! YOU ARE A TRUE HERO!!!!!! Our prayers go out to the family. If you ever need anything we're right next door.

I knew Fred in high school. We had a few classes together and though I only knew him through the brief minutes in class I know that he was a GREAT guy! What he did for our country was so honorable and I love and respect him for the ultimate sacrifice that he made for our safety.
I also knew Fred's fiancee Jamie. I met Jamie at our friend Shannon's funeral in 2002. Jamie and I were both heartbroken over the loss of our friend and found a friendship within each other. Although I only talked to Jamie on the internet periodically and saw her a few times at school my senior year we unfotunatly lost touch after my graduation...other than a few times when she would come into my job to tan and we would catch up. Last time we talked she stopped by and was telling me about their plans for when Fred came home. Jamie my deepest sympathy goes out to you sweetie. If you read this, email me I'd like to talk to you.
To his family and friends I don't know you but Thank You for Fred he touched my heart and made an everlasting impact on this country and will deeply be missed by all who knew him!

To the family and friends:
We are extremly sorry for your loss. Both my husband and I went to high school with Fred. I was in his ROTC class our junior year and my husband James, better known as Peach in high school, played football with Fred. We just heard that Fred was in the accident this past weekend. I was also friends with Jamie and her family. I just really want to say that we are sorry and i wish that there was something we could do to help aid your pain. We just had a tragidy about two weeks before this and we just want you to know that we share your pain. And to Fred, THANK YOU for serving and protecting our country. Jamie if you read this please email me, i would like to talk to you. God bless everyone who reads this and knew Fred. Again we are sorry for your loss.

I will always love you and miss you!
Wow there are so many things to say and I just don't know where to start. We had everything planned out and we almost made it, but I guess God had other plans for you. I still don't believe it and I don't know if I ever will be able to accept it. It's so hard! I don't have any idea how I'm going to get through it this time, but I'm going to try to handle things the way you would want me to handle them. I hope you know you meant the world to me, I would have done anything for you...I would have even let you buy a big screen before our bed. I'm very proud of you for what you've done. I know you were happy and died doing what you wanted to do and with tons of honor. I will never forget you and the memories we share. Take good care of Shannon for me. I know I'll be with y'all again one day, but until then help me, your family, and your friends get through this. You will ALWAYS have a very very special place in my heart, and I will NEVER forget you. I love you with all my heart. You still are and always will be my fiance. I will miss you horribly.
Love always your fiance,

With Love and Pride....You Will Be Truly Missed!
I am still in shock! Between the tears, my heart keeps telling me that this nightmare is not happening..while my head is telling me that I am not dreaming! I keep thinking that any moment that the phone will ring and I will hear "Is Jamie there?" I would give anything to hear those words again! You are the stars in my daughter's eyes that shine every time she says "Fred" and that tells me that you are the love of her life! I wish that you and Jamie would have been given the chance to live the life that you both deserved! I loved you like my own son and I will miss you so very much! I am very proud of you and know that you are truly a hero! And since I haven't told you this before "Thank You" for keeping us safe here at home! You are a very fine young man..and I feel blessed to call you "Son." Although our hearts are heavy, I know that God has bigger plans for you! We will all be together again someday...til then know that you are loved!
You and Shannon take care of each other!

Love and Sadness
Although I had only met Fred once or twice I was so impressed with what a funny, outgoing young man he was. When I heard he was joining the Marines, I knew then he was also full of honor, pride and bravery. Even though I am a middle aged woman, I knew he was the type of person we all aspire to be at any stage in our lives. I was proud to know him and even prouder he loved my niece and would eventually be a member of our family. Jamie, you and Fred may not be married in the flesh, but I truly believe you and he are married in a way that transcends earthly bounds. Although it's not a choice you would willingly make, you now have a wonderful guardian angel to look after you and take care of you the way he chose to look after and take care of ALL of us here in the United States. Fred was a brave and honorable young man. This world could use more people like him.
Events like these make us so profoundly sad....yet so profoundly proud. We should all say a prayer for all of the young men and women, as well as their families, still serving our country. As evidenced by the tragic turn of events in Fred's loved ones lives, some of those young, brave soldiers will make the ultimate, ultimate sacrifice to keep us a safe and free nation and will indeed leave the world a much better place. Words can not convey the thanks I have for Fred and all of the soldiers who have lost theirs lives or are left serving our country. May God truly, truly bless them.
With much love and sadness,
Aunt Mary

I also went to high school with Fred and met him our Junior year in a computer class. He had such a great sense of humor and was very proud of our country. The day he decided he was to be in the marines I thought he was crazy because of what was going on. When I shared my thoughts about this with him he said he wasn't crazy, that he would go over there and fight for freedom because he loved our country and he was proud. God bless him and his family.

To LCPL. Fred Lee Maciel family:
I send my sincerest sympathy to you all through your time of loss. Though we must remember that God puts people like Fred on this earth, to touch our hearts, and to make us smile. And in return he takes them to do the same with him. And that is just what he did. Please remember that he is in the Lord's hands now, and he will take him under his wing. And he too will give you the strength to make it through this whole ordeal. I met Fred years ago. When I came out to Texas to visit my family, or when he came to Virginia with my Uncle & cousins(that we share!). He was always quite the character. And truly will be missed. Your in my thoughts and prayers! GOD BLESS!!!

To lose a life at such a young age is so disheartening but Fred went to be with his savior in the most honorable way a man can go. He absolutely made the ultimate sacrifice. He died fighting for the freedom of his country and countrymen. May God bless his family, fiance and loved ones. May each of you find comfort and peace in your hearts and know that you are truly honored to have been a part of his life. Always know that a hero lives inside of you.

While at work on Thursday I happened to see one of the longest funeral processions ever out my office window. I paused and watched as everyone drove by and observed a variety of vehicles including a school bus and motorcycles. Being a Spring resident for the past 20 years I stopped and wondered who this beloved person might be. I searched The Chronicle until I found out.
I know that I am a stranger to you, but I had to let you know how sorry I am for your loss. Please know that your son's sacrifice for our country will not be forgotten even to people he never knew. And to your family, my sincerest condolences.

I went to High School with Fred and I'm friends with him. I remeber when Fred decided to join the marines. He was happy and very proud of himself. During high school he made class alot better. We would joke around all the time during Mr. Gingles class. We graduated together. When Fred came home from leave I went and played pool with him and his girlfriend. Seeing him happy and healthy helped me make a change in my life. Fred and other friends help me make my decision to join the Navy. Fred was a real good friend and I dont know how I'm going to take when I go home knowing he is gone. My blessing go out to his family and our friends. Fred helped me throghout school. I still can't come to reality about his death but I know he is looking over us and will protect us all like he was as a marine. I would like to hear from his parents and our friends but don't have any numbers so if anyone would like to talk call me at (757)319-7618.
